Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When a new student reaches out, I like to schedule an introductory evaluation. This is a 100% free lesson and it serves in two ways. One: I get evaluate the student's needs and current skill level. Two: The student gets to evaluate me and my methods to see if we are a good fit to move forward with a lesson plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been playing tennis since the age of 5. That's almost 40 years on the court. I started playing junior tournaments at age 12 and played at the open level starting at age 16. My coaching career began at age 21 when I joined the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). The USPTA changed their name and is now the Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA). I have received ongoing training through the RSPA training portal as well as attending in-person coaching workshops.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
With each new student I like to schedule a 100% free first lesson to evaluate their needs, and to show them a little bit of what they will be getting from my coaching methods. After that, if the student decides to move forward with a lesson program, I charge a $100 flat rate per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
My journey into teaching started when I was 21 years old. A friend of my saw me play in a tournament and decided he wanted to learn tennis. I took him out several times over the next few months and basically gave him free lessons. During these sessions, I developed a love for teaching tennis and decided to try and pick up a few true clients. Everything took off from there.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from all walks of life: Beginners, intermediate players, high schoolers, college players, and open level players. Whether you're looking to start learning tennis, or add to your high level arsenal for tournament play, and everything in between, I would love to help you reach your goals.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice is for you to TAKE THAT FIRST STEP. Reach out to some local coaches and instructors and schedule that first lesson with each of them to see if they're a great fit for you. Once you have seen a few instructors' methods, you can decide on which one will help further your goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Wow!! This is a good one. There are so many questions when it comes to learning tennis from a professional instructor. I'll go through a few of the most important ones:
1. Is tennis right for me? If so, what skills do I already have, and what do I
hope to achieve?
2. What do I want to get out of my tennis journey? Fitness? Recreational and
social play? League or tournament play? Just have some fun learning
something new?
3. What type of teacher/coach would suit my needs the best?
4. How much time, energy, and money am I willing to invest in achieving my
tennis goals?
These are just some questions to get you started thinking about all the things involved in learning tennis, advancing your current level, or adding techniques and skills to an already well rounded game.
