Experience. I have been playing drums for 54 years. Teaching drums for twenty. I have toured with two major rock bands, had my own band for 7 years, played for many theatrical productions, recorded a fair number of albums, played with the Phoenix Symphony for 3 seasons, a lot of studio work and continue to do as much of the above as possible...still!
I love it when I see someone start to ‘GET IT’. They start controlling their hands and feet and start to actually make music. I can give a student the tools and the information to use those tools to make that music and hopefully along the way the student will aquire the joy and passion for playing that I have.
David was my first teacher and set me on the right path. Over the years we spent time on reading, hand & foot technique, rudimental solos, improvisation, listening, and various styles, and always emphasized the importance of groove, dynamics, and listening while keeping things fun. The skills and concepts I learned & developed with David are things I apply both in my playing and with my students. I can't recommend him enough.
David is easy to work with, takes time getting to know his students and their interests. My son loves going to drum lessons and has learned a lot over the past 3 years. Highly recommend.
David was the consummate professional who helped to teach me how to be an individual and who assisted my growth in music exponentially as an adolescent. He even came to my school to help me learn within the confines of the school band which helped me more than he knew. He was always patient and kind despite me being a very trying kid most of the time. He helped me through humor and by maintaining his positive boundaries. I grew in so many more ways than just musically and I have David to thank for a lot of it. He has been a great role model, and wonderful friend, for me throughout my life.
David is a talented professional musician and teacher with UNT pedigree (University of North Texas at Denton is arguably the top Jazz school in the country). I have been taking lessons with him for the last 7 years. David uses a well rounded approach to teaching where he emphasizes working on; hands (rudiments) foot control, rythmic patterns, reading and musicality. He is a patient and intuitive teacher that has gotten me past several learning pleateaus. I Highly recommend David for any genre of music or whatever level your chops are at!
