Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I'll see where the student is at with their drumming. I'll ask how long they've been playing, their experience, etc. If they're completely new I'll start them off with how to hold a stick, how to hit the drum, then eventually move onto how to play a beat. If they're more experienced, I'll go over what they already know fundamentally, I'll teach them new beats/rhythms or songs they want to learn or specifically need to work on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been drumming for 23 years, learned how to read music all through elementary, middle school and high school. I learned all my rudiments in high school in the marching band and winter drum line and was the center snare my senior year. When I graduated, I taught the high school drum line for the whole year and we got 2nd place in the winter drum line championship.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Prices vary depending on location. One hour is $50 if lessons are at my home/online, and lessons anywhere else starts at $60. I will travel!
How did you get started teaching?
In drumming you're always learning, so having drummer friends growing up, we taught each other new things in a fun and friendly way. In drum line, I would be the first one to learn all the music, and I would help teach it to the rest of the line. I fell in love with teaching from there.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with all types of students, beginners to advanced drummers. Doesn't matter the age, with practice and patience, I will get your drumming skills advanced to a high standard.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Go into the experience with an open mind. Drumming is fun!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask yourself "what do I want to get out of this experience, being a drummer?". Some people just want to play as a hobby and pick it up every once in a while, or some people want to make it a profession. Any answer to that question is a good answer, as long as you're willing to learn!
