I'm a self-taught dancer, so I know how it feels to want to be able to teach myself without having much studio experience! I'm very patient with my dancers because I know all dancers regardless of age have to start from somewhere! I will work with my dancers to help them reach the goal that they want to reach and even try to surpass it as well if they're willing to push as much as they can.
I love teaching! I've been teaching since around 2016/2017. I use to be part of performances and would attend to several dance events such as battles and major events (World of Dance, Urban Hiphop, etc), but after teaching a few classes at first, it made me realize that all I want to do is just teach and help my dancers progress as the dancer they'd hope to be!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically with a new student, I try to see where they are dance-wise. I'll normally ask if they've ever taken any classes and if so, what levels or how many years they've been dancing for.
Then I set my class up occording to their experience.
Normally for beginner levels, I try to stick with foundational movements like grooves and popping since learning these things will help them grow as a hiphop dancer and flow right into other styles of hiphop.
If intermediate-advanced levels, I'll have them learn choreography depending on the level, as well as practice freestyling/improv. Freestyle is such an essential portion of dance, especially hiphop! So having the dancer(s) comfortable with freestyling will not only help them grow as a dancer, but it'll help them with creating choreography as well.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've been a self-taught dancer since the age of 10 and didn't take my very first real dance class until the age of 17 at Mission Vista High School as a Senior. After that, I went to Mira Costa College and majored as a dancer. So I'd spend the next 4+ years learning about other dance styles and honing on the style I started with, hiphop. Not only that, but I was also going back to Mission Vista High School to teach free workshops as well as create a few pieces for both Modern and Hiphop for their showcases.
I started teaching dance around 2016/2017 professionally and have been teaching since. Now I'm trying to broaden out my branches and lean towards private classes as well, which I have done during Covid with my concurrent dancers!

My standard pricing for classes is generally $25/hr.
How did you get started teaching?
Funny enough, I started becoming more interested in teaching while I was heavily into the battle and performing scene. I wasn't always interested in teaching, although I would teach workshops here and there, but teaching an actual class itself was never under my radar until late 2016, early 2017 when I landed my first real studio class. After that, I had fallen in love with teaching and the students I teach as well! Especially the students, because you get attached with every single one of them and enjoy watching their progression whether they had little to no experience at first to having 10+ years of experience!
What types of students have you worked with?
The type of students I've worked with really ranges. I've worked with very young and very old students who all had no dance experience. I've worked with students who were both young and old with 10+ years of experience. I've worked with dancers who are now internet sensations (Merrick Hanna).
So my teaching really is pretty broaden out based on each dancer.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The most recent event I'm probably most fond of is during covid. My dancers still wanted to keep dancing and they asked me for private classes. This was 100% the highlight of my whole 2020, because I felt very appreciated and would pretty much loved as a dance instructor.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The type of teacher I would want to hire if I were the student is someone who is relatively close first and foremost, but also someone who can work with anyone and not just a certain type of dancer. An instructor who can work with someone who has no experience in dance and someone who has years of experience shows their range in teaching.
I would also like to find a teacher who doesn't only teach dance, but can show confidence in their movements! An instructor with confidence can really be spread to their students as well as the energy the bring too!
Last thing would obviously be the experience as well. If I were a new dancer or a parent of a young new dancer, I would be looking for someone who has at LEAST taught a few classes and has a few years under their belt as a dancer, because that instructor is probably trying to gain the experience in order to teach in general, but if it's for a dancer that is much more experienced, I'd look for someone who has years of experience teaching.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What students should probably think before talking to teachers about their needs is, what type of dance style do they want to pursue/train in as well as being able to see if the teacher is comfortable with the dancer coming to them or the teacher coming to them.
For example for myself, I prefer to go to my students due to my house being occupied as I live with my family and no room anywhere to invite anyone over to teach a class, so I'd be more comfortable with teaching them at their home or try to find a cheaper studio that would allow me to teach there.
