Students work in a fully equipped 4K two-camera video studio, taking scenes through a cycle of cold reading, rehearsing, recording, playback and critique, to determine what works and what doesn't work in terms of their performances. All our work is based on Tony Barr's highlyacclaimed  book ACTING FOR THE CAMERA. Students also receive free coaching for all their auditions.

Q & A

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I interview them extensively about their background and training. Then I do a cold reading with them and give them feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. Then I show them some solutions to whatever problems they have.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

B.A. in Literature and Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley

M.A. in Radio and Television Production from San Francisco State University

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

private lessons are $50 an hour

classes at the Workshop are $210 a month plus a one-time

registration fee of $45

How did you get started teaching?

I began by conducting the studio classes at Tony Barr's Film Actors Workshop, taping scenes for the other acting teachers in a 3-camera video studio. Eventually I learned so much about acting that Tony suggested I become a teacher.

What types of students have you worked with?

Everything from beginners to Oscar winners.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Concerts on the pier in Santa Monica last summer. Fantastic!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Find somone who respects you and treats you like an equal. Stay away from gurus and authoritarians. They won't teach you anything and they'll make your life miserable. Take Pink Floyd's advice from their song, "The Wall":

We don't need no education/ We don't need no thought contol/No dark sarcasm in the classroom/Teacher leave those kids alone/All and all/You're just another brick in the Wall....

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What is it a want to study?

What's my goal?

What's my strong point?

What's my weak point?

What's my passion?
