My passion is the love & joy of the dance. To see a student achieve goals & gain confidence from those achievements is my greatest pleasure. Not all students may wish to continue on to the professional level but by nurturing the spirit of the student to acheive a sense of self-accomplishment, self-motivation, self-discipline & self-assurance can only positively affect their life in any chosen career.

Students also teach the teacher. I have learned many lessons from my students... how to listen, compassion, understanding & patience.

Frequently asked questions

New students are usually nervous, especially a beginner. Students who have never studied before are not sure what to expect & feel they have to get everything accomplished at the 1st try with no mistakes. We reassure the student it takes time to reach goals & that it is ok to make mistakes. For more experienced student, new voices & faces, different ways of teaching, wondering if they will fit in with the class. We work hard to ensure the student feels welcome & now a part of our dance family. New students are introduced to the class & one of the older students in the class are assigned to become a mentor to that student.

I started teaching at age 18. In 1980, I was in a serious car accident that left me with injuries that ended any chance of a professional dance career. My mentor started teaching me how to teach, run a dance school business, costume, staging, etc. I apprenticed with her for 11 years.

I work with students from all around the world. Dance students, off-ice dance training for figure skaters, musical theatre students.

First of all, what kind of dance school are you looking for? There is a difference between competition schools & those schools that do not compete. Recreational & more intensive dance schools.

Are they qualified. What is their training/education. How long have they taught. Do they teach any one dance technique method. How well do they know their dance method.

Is the teacher approachable. Do they listen to you.

A student should not be afraid to approach a teacher with needs or concerns as long as it is within a dance teacher's scope of practice.

My students know they can talk to me at any time.

1. Can the need/concern wait until after class?

2. Is the need/concern within the dance teacher's scope of practice?

This is a wide area so I've covered a few things here....

Physical: Injuries & medical needs:

If a student received any minor injuries outside of the dance school they tell me so I can monitor them in class or if serious enough, to sit & watch the class. Any special medical needs such as asthma, diabeties, etc. Alert the teacher immediately. A dance school is an athletic venue and minor aches & pains are expected such as sore muscles, strains, etc. If any pain lasts longer than 3 days without feeling better then it's time to see your doctor.

Emotional/psychological:

Bullying by other students or parents, including theft or damage to a student's personal property is not tolerated at LDC. Alert the teacher immediately.

Depending on the age, class settings have a variety of personalities & they may not always get along with each other. Students are expected to behave in a professional manner. The teacher should already be aware but if not, then alert the teacher.

As a teacher, I talk all day long.. I try to be aware of what I say & how I say it to my students but sometimes I might say something that inadvertantly hurts or was misunderstood. Approach me after class & talk to me...
