Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to know why the student is interestd in dance.
I often conduct classes for group as well as privates fro wedding reception 1st dance, father-daughter dance, et al.
My specialty is contemporary country western dancing, free-form and choreographed two-step, country waltz, East Coast & West Coast Swing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taught western dance for over 25 years, I competed in UCWDC competitions in Los Angeles and San Diwgo. I have received hundreds of hours of dance instruction from the very best in California -- Sony Watson, Jordan & Tattianna, Jay Byam, and many more.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing is per hourt for group and privates.
How did you get started teaching?
A funny story -- I was brokenhearted over a girl breaking up with me. I found myself moping around the Santa Barbara County Fair in Santa Maria. THere was a country band playing on aflatbed truck. My dear friend and dance instructor, susan McNeil, happened by. She saw my sadness, and said, "You know what? We're going right out here in this grass field and dance!" I had never danced before, and certainly wasn't goign to start then. My sails were down, thogh, and I though, "Whatever..." After a couple of simple instructions and kind of gragging me around the field, I was elated -- I said, "That's all there is to it? Really?", and my dear friend Susan lied right to my face: "That's all there is to it!". Later in the month, SUssan was to drag me to every calss she taught AND to a little bar in Pismo where she met with all the local instructors. They all taught me a new dance -- the Horseshoe Shuffle! I never felt so loved, and I've been hooked ever since!
What types of students have you worked with?
My favorites are wedding couples working on their 1st dance. It is truly a beautiful thing to see them grow in strength, knowledge, and confidence.
