My teaching approach: My approach is very laid back. I like to focus on things that are fun and will keep the student interested but at the same time incorporate technical things that are essential for the development of the student. A lot of people make fundamentals boring but it doesn't have to be that way. As far as professional experiences i've performed with Jimmy Greene, Aaron Goldberg, Myron Walden and more. I've opened up for The Jim Hall Trio, The Machine and Darcy James Argues Secret Society. My influences are: Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Joe Satriani, Carlos Sant ... View Profile

I combine my love of music (playing, singing, song writing and producing) with my empathic connection to people. That makes me a teacher who connects on a variety of levels, not just the mechanics of music. I've found that all of us have a balance of confidence and insecurity - as does every artist - and the trick is to identify that special spark, nurture it and learn to share it with a world that despereately needs the Arts. I'm very patient, but I also like to set goals so that my students don't languish at the advanced beginner stage! Music thrives when we know how to engage our body, mind and spirit so I bring my knowledge of yoga, actin ... View Profile

APL Guitar And Piano Lessons

Andy Lafreniere is a life long music educator who has specialized in the Suzuki method. This method emphasizes starting children on an instrument at an early age (3-4). Music reading is delayed until they have developed a basic technique and learn their first pieces by ear. Reading is introduced shortly afterward. Parents play an important role in this process by organizing practice sessions and motivating their child. Time is spent with the parent to develop some basic skills that will enhance the overall experience. Traditional adult lessons are also available. Andy has been teaching guitar and piano for over forty years. He is a graduate o ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
