Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Depending on what type of material we are working on, and for what purpose (i.e. a monologue vs. a scene for an audition, or classical text vs. contemporary), I will go through the material witht the student to analyize the character, situation and any questions the student may have. We then work towards making exciting, unique choices that come from within the student. We work from a place of curiosity and we have fun with the material, no matter what it is.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 20 years of professional acting experience, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the Guthrie Theater Actor Training Program. I have also taught with the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, where we went into schools in the tri-state area, and even had an opportunity to teach young cadets at West Point!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate starts at $60 for an hour session. This can be negotiable depending on the needs of the student.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always had a passion for sharing ideas and furthering my skills through teaching others. Even at university, I was a Teaching Assistant for two years.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from all ages- children, to high school, college and working adult professionals.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Last week, I coached a professional actor an hour before his audition- he had very little time to prepare and he was nervous. We calmly broke down the material into manageable parts, memorized and made fun choices- and by the time our session was finished, he was calm, confident and ready to nail it. He got a call-back!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who will bring out the best in YOU, and who is adaptable: someone who is willing to find new ways to help you, and who is willing to get creative to help you understand and enjoy the material, and to make the acting choices only YOU can make.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Depending on the purpose of the session or lesson, think about what you find most challenging in the material, and what you enjoy the most about the material. From here, we can unpack it to answer some questions and make some choices that are most fun for you.
