Christina C. says, "Ty (Christian) is wonderful with my daughter and has taught her many useful tools she’ll need in order to pursue her dream of voice acting. He has helped her to gain the confidence to reach out and audition for her first small role (which she landed!) and we’re hoping it will lead to many more! I can’t say enough good things about him and I’m so thankful we found him!!" Read more

I am a graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and the prestigious Berklee College of Music. I was fortunate to be a 6 time Billboard Club charting singer/songwriter in the Dance music genre. Throughout this time, I taught for Wolftrap's Teaching Artist program in DC public and charter schools and Levine School of Music's summer programs. For almost 20 years, I have ran my home studio for piano, voice, music theory, songwriting, and more. Within the last 5 years, I have adapted all lessons to also occur online. As teacher, I am warm, friendly, energetic and passionate about every facet of music! Its hope to impart that same ...

Charlotte .. says, " I think Ann started around the holiday season, she’s had about one academic semester of once per week classes. She was still 2 years old when she started at Ottley’s Music School. Now she can find middle C, identify A, B or C anywhere on the keyboard, read notations like piano meaning play softly, fortissimo meaning play loudly, and quarter rest. She has been introduced to half and full notes and rests, but doesn’t yet consistently apply them. She can play simple 3-note sequences with either the left or right hand but sometimes prefers to play all notes with either her thumb or index finger rather than following the assigned fingers for each key. It’s really an extraordinary amount of progress for her age. I’ve been surprised" Read more

Katy P. says, "Working with Anne Cronvich was a delightful experience! I greatly enjoyed not just learning singing techniques from her, but also learning more about the vocal mechanism. Understanding vocal performance from multiple angles made for productive lessons and really helped me improve (and honestly helped make me aware of my current career path— speech pathology)! Anne is an encouraging teacher who is excellent at building rapport, balancing fun with work, and bringing a true understanding of the craft! " Read more

Your Singing Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 to $90 per hour on average. Prices vary depending on the teacher's location, experience, reputation, and whether you're taking a private or group lesson. Group lessons typically cost less per person than private lessons, but you may not get as much personal attention and feedback in a group setting.

  • Some singing teachers charge a flat rate for a specified increment of time, typically in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute increments.
  • Many coaches offer package deals to purchase 2 to 10+ lessons at a time and reduce the cost per lesson.

Do singing lessons work?

Singing lessons won't change your sound completely, but they can help improve your sound by strengthening your vocal cords and improving your range and tone.

What do singing lessons teach you?

Singing lessons involve more than just your voice. A vocal coach will teach you how to hold and improve your posture, which gives your diaphragm optimal room to expand. You also learn proper breathing techniques and how to use your breath to improve your tone. Singing lessons also help you improve your diction—the way you articulate your words when singing—as well as your ability to match specific pitches.

Can adults take singing lessons?

Yes, adults can absolutely take singing lessons. While starting singing lessons at a young age gives you more time to develop your voice, it's never too late to begin learning and improve your singing voice.

How do I find the best singing lessons near me?

Follow these guidelines to help you choose the best singing lessons near you:

  • Check out their reviews on Lessons.com and Google.
  • Get at least three estimates from teachers with similar credentials.
  • Ask for recommendations from others in the local music community.
  • Do a trial meeting or lesson if possible with several teachers to find the best fit for your goals.
  • Ask them about their training and credentials.
  • Ask about what specific methods and techniques they teach.
  • Ask about the specific progress they've made with other students.
  • Make sure their schedule matches your availability.

What questions should I ask when choosing a singing teacher?

Ask these questions to help you choose the best singing teacher for you:

  • How long have you been teaching singing?
  • Can you share any success stories?
  • Do I need to have a good voice already to become a better singer?
  • How long does it typically take to see improvement?
  • Do you offer any package deals?
  • What is your teaching schedule?
  • How long are your singing lessons?
  • How often should I practice?
  • Do you offer private or group lessons?
  • Where do you teach?
  • Do you offer online lessons using video calling?

The Ottley Music School has been instrumental in helping my daughter learn to read music and perform appropriate but challenging pieces. The teachers encourage each child to reach their potential while providing top notch instruction. We are happy with the quality of instruction and performance opportunities our child has received at Ottley Music School.

Explains things in an easily understandable way; keeps lessons fun while including music theory. Improvements already apparent after just a few lessons. Comfortable rehearsal space, plenty of educational materials, and very clearly a skilled instructor.

I was with Anne for many years. Not only does she have a great ability for teaching technical aspects, but a real gift for bringing forth one's individuality to grow and apply that for a singer to express their core.
