Chris Johnston, PGA Golf Instructor

About

I've been a PGA Golf Instructor since 1994 (29 years) and before moving to the United States, was a Canadian class 'A' PGA Golf Professional. I'm also a TPI certified fitness instructor (Titleist Performance Institute) and was 2018 New Jersey PGA Teacher of the Year.

Throughout my teaching career, I've built countless golf training tools in order to teach the necessary fundamentals, and to conquer ALL of Golf's worst swing faults. I also believe that training exercises and drills act as medicine to 'heal' the suffering golfer.

Before moving to the Orlando area in November 2021, I was teaching in the New Jersey PGA section and had the honor of receiving the 2018 New Jersey PGA Teacher of the Year award.

From 2015 to 2019, I wrote 11 articles for Golf Tips magazine and had a 'feature' article in PGA Magazine's December 2016 issue.

Several of these Golf Tips magazine articles can still be seen on Golf Tips magazine's website. One of these articles is titled: "Clean up Your Sand Shots".

During the peak of the Covid pandemic, I took it upon myself to do 40 straight days of one minute "CREATIVE" Instagram Golf Tip videos, titled, "A Tip a Day to Get us to May". It was May that 'Golf' was to 'open up' in New Jersey again.

I use video in my lessons and students receive a "Video VoiceOver Summary", 1 - 2 days following their lesson in order to help them remember and understand what they need to work on. I explain to my students that this 'summary' video is 'Gold' and will never lose its value and having the ability to refer back to it is 'Priceless!'

I also have a website where lessons can be booked with more information related to me and my teaching philosophy. https://www.cjohnstonpga.com

My passion for teaching golf comes from seeing my student progress and achieve their goals.

When a student can make sense of what they are doing and see their improvement, either in the video, with their score or shots is extremely rewarding.

How does one accurately describe Chris Johnston?
PGA Professional? Way too generic. Instructor? Slightly less generic. Coach? Moving in the right direction. Teacher? Getting warmer, but the significance of this term has been hollowed out by that myriad of PGA teachers.โ€ Those club pro impostors whod do us eager amateurs a big favor by sticking to tee time bookings and ringing up golf shirts rather than masking as that special type of person with professorial substance and the articulation to teach, train and empathetically impart knowledge. Just keep swinging, the common refrain from one such common individual happy to take my money, is no pearl of wisdom. Particularly when it just kept ingraining a bad swing move.
Back to Chris. A teacher in the purest sense, yes. But thats still not enough to cover all his facets. How about Tinkerer? Swing scientist? Perhaps a mad scientist? What about a mechanical genius? Or even a mechanical artist judging by all those purposeful devices hes crafted over decades, now displayed on his workshop wall?
How about a genius imparting his art and science to your attempt at on-course brilliance? Tailored to your physical size, shape, and athleticism.
I first bumped into Chris at a local driving range. He was conducting a private lesson in the roped off grass at the side of the hitting bays. Jumbo bucket in hand, spying all the life-sized gadgetry and training paraphernalia spread about the area, I found myself gravitating to his side of the property, my technical curiosity stoked. In between shots I not so subtly watched his lesson in progress, wondering how those tools were used, tilting my ear their way to pick up any free bits of tutelage. At that stage my game was at an impasse, stuck in the mud of lackluster scores and predictable blow-up holes that get you contemplating tennis. And yet Id made a conscious choice to go back to my practice roots from many years before which included working with a coach. I had, in fact, already gone through four other pros in short succession before I headed over to Chriss workshop later that day. The following week we started a teacher-student engagement spanning 5 years that continues to this day.
With Chris, I realized I had never really understood the golf swing, just thought I did. That I had practiced incorrectly. That I complicated the process of consistent ball striking. Once I let the old way go and accepted his new path, I quickly started to see just how good the hands were that my game was now in. And when at last I began to sense that very specific feedback- that explosive, undeniable power of truly solid contact, the furious spin with which the ball moves through space and time, arcing softly right-to-left along its predestined path to target, I caught a glimpse of that exalted plane of existence where tour pros live and dance. Cant tell you the feeling of shooting par for the first time and then doing it again a few days later. It was me hitting the shots. Me tee to green. Me putting in the time those weeks between lessons. But it was Chris who changed the road I was on and got me home.
NET: I went from a 7 GHIN (on my best day, but more like a 9 or 10) to a solid 5 (on my worst day, but more like a 3 or 4).
Btw, have you seen him strike a ball? If you are lucky enough to squeeze out a playing lesson from his packed schedule, it is the ultimate validation that you chose the right guy. Majestic fluidity and poise, constituting and reinforcing everything he taught you.

Chris loves what he does and puts 110% effort into each student. Iโ€™ve never experienced a teacher that cares as much about their students success as Chris. If youโ€™re willing to put in the work he will help you turn into a great golfer. I have 100% confidence in Chris and appreciate him very much.

Quick background on myself and golf: I started trying to play golf in spring 2018 when my two sons decided they no longer wanted to play baseball. At the time I was on the local Little League Board and a coach of two teams. I worried I would lose my connection to them without baseball. A colleague shared with me that golf could be the solution.
Needless to say, I was terrible; in fact, my sons were taking a golf instruction class at a driving range and the instructor pointed me out to the class as someone that was awful.
Fortunately, I found Chris to be my golf instructor. His patience, enthusiasm, and teaching methods have converted me to a lifelong golfer, and I enthusiastically support Chris.
    - After every lesson you receive a custom 3 to 5-minute video detailing what you learned and appropriate drills to reinforce the material. Between our collective videos, we have more than 40 lessons. The best part is how easy it is to go back and review these materials and virtually take the lesson again.
    - Several friends have taken lessons from Chris. When we play together, we joke about Chrisโ€™s reminders โ€“ GPS (Grip Posture Stance), Bowlerโ€™s Finish, or a specific two-minute drill. We each carry his grip trainer on the course and his consistency across his students is amazing. We are literally coaching each other.
I enthusiastically support Chris as an instructor.

At the age of 12, new to golf, I began lessons with Chris. Chrisโ€™s teaching techniques, coupled with his handmade creative tools, provided me a solid foundation for the game. Chris taught me everything from the importance of grip, to my posture, pre shot setup routine, and follow through, all of which I use for every single shot.
Chris is an outstanding coach. He is extremely caring and is passionate about golf and teaching. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from and work with Chris. If asked I would highly recommend you to work with Chris.

I have taken lessons elsewhere and nobody compares to Chris! He has access to all of the latest technology and the most innovative techniques. He has even built custom training aids for me to keep so I can constantly work on my game. He finds a way to connect with each player and helps build their game from the ground up. He is always available between lessons and will review videos I send him to make sure that I am always moving in the right direction. If you are interested in taking a lesson, give Chris a call. You will not be disappointed. I have been working for several years and I always look forward to my next lesson.

    Frequently asked questions

As most golf instructors should do, the first lesson starts off with getting to know your student, along with your student getting to know you. The first 8 to 12 minutes will be where I will find out more about my student's motivation for taking lessons, along with their history, related to past lessons, how long they have been playing, the sports they have played in the past, or still play presently in addition to their average score or handicap.  Are usually finish up this 'meet and greet' portion of the lesson by asking the student if they have any 'goals' in mind.  If they do not, I help them with setting short and long-term goals for them to achieve. After the 'meet and greet', over the next 5 minutes, I go into the 'framework of my philosophy' as it relates to 'swing and game improvement'.

I have been a PGA of America class 'A' Golf Instructor since 1994 (29 years) with 'continuing education' as a prerequisite to keeping PGA class 'A' member status and a TPI Golf Fitness Instructor, level 2 since 2007.

My standard 'one hour' lesson rate is presently $89.00, which was my '3 pack' series rate, but I made it my 'special' hourly rate with lessons purchased one at a time.

I was a born teacher, which came from me teaching myself without any golf instruction when I was 10 years old. Older golfers gravitated towards me because I would help them with their game. I must have known what I was talking about, because they kept on asking me to help them.

I teach golfers of All LEVELS.  I also feel that not only can I teach the beginner golfer, the struggling weekend, warrior, or single digit handicap shooter, I can teach the 'High Level' tournament player with specialized golf training tools I have built to work on there very specific needs.

Although not too recent, having been awarded the 2018 New Jersey PGA Teacher of the Year would have to be my fondest event I have experienced on a personal level.

As it relates to students, having "Tarek" go from shooting in the high 90s to now being a seven handicap and consistently shooting in the 70s is definitely rewarding.

Since I teach in the very 'transient' state of Florida, where my students will 'come and go', I will often tell a student to make sure to continue to take lessons and to find a good golf instructor at home.

I will inform the student to make sure that their teacher back home focuses on 'key fundamentals' that they need to continue to work on if they are too have a chance of achieving their goals.

I will also inform them that I am their teacher for life and can be contacted at any time through email, phone or text.

Students need to ask themselves if they are committed to improving and doing the work that is necessary for them to achieve their goals.
