About
David Barragan has been the Director of the ESTA Tennis Academy since 2017. He is Colombian and speaks fluent Spanish, English and German. David started playing tennis when he was five years old and competed in junior tournaments all over the east coast since he was seven. His highest ranking was #9 in the North Carolina Junior Boys’ 18’s division. During his four years as #1 on the East Mecklenburg High School tennis team in Charlotte, North Carolina, David was voted Most Valuable Player, was Team Captain and All-Conference. He was awarded the North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Participation Award in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
After high school, David was recruited by Barry University’s men’s tennis team. During his college career, he was Team Captain 2009-2010 and his team were the Sunshine State Conference Champions in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and NCAA Division II National Championship Finalists in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, David graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and also helped the Barry University’s Division II Men’s Tennis team win their first NCAA National Championship.
In 2012, David was offered a teaching position in Stuttgart, Germany where he was a professional tennis instructor for the Wüttemburgischer Tennis Bund (German Tennis Federation) for five years. He worked with high-performance junior players from over 20 different countries all over Europe and Asia. David competed several seasons for the Sindelfingen Tennis Club in the Oberliga German tennis division. After his participation in the Sofia, Bulgaria International Tennis Federation Conference in 2017, David decided to return home to Orlando, Florida where he resides now with his wife, Laura.
David has two sisters, Natalie and Jina and his mother, Gloria. His father, Alvaro, who taught David tennis, passed away in 2011 from natural causes. He is David’s inspiration.
