About
Research shows that learning to play a musical instrument helps students perform better in school. This improves memory function, builds social skills, and reduces stress. Studying a musical instrument has many positive benefits for both children and adults. Playing along with other musicians is a great way to build long lasting relationships and is a very fulfilling activity that brings people together.

My name is John Odom and I am a Drumset Teacher in East Orlando. I have been teaching for 15 1/2 years and I have been playing the drums for forty years. I am currently the worship drummer for my church and I play in a local Christian rock band. I have many years of experience of playing with different musicians in different types of settings and venues.
Music education is something that I take very seriously. While teaching I am also a lifelong student of the drums as I continue to study and practice to keep growing as both a drummer and teacher. I am a member of the following drumming educational groups:
The Professional Drum Teachers Guild

I have completed the Drumset Fundamentals course with Berklee College of Music. I continue to study and grow as a teacher since I must inspire and set a good example for my students.
I have a large amount of resources to use to help students learn how to play their favorite songs. I can teach how to play with proper technique while learning many different styles, grooves, and fills. I also educate students on what it takes to play with other musicians in a band setting. I make the learning fun while the students stay motivated as they learn and grow.
I will travel to your home if you live within a twenty mile radius of my zip code. The first lesson is FREE. Subsequent lessons are $40.00 per half hour and $50.00 per hour. For students who live farther away and/or the South side of Orlando I am also teaching at Flamenco Del Sur Dance and Music School in the Narcoossee Business Park. I also assist students and parents with choosing a drumset that will work well for their child when they are ready to make a purchase. I will setup and tune an acoustic drumkit or setup and confirm that an electric drumkit is working properly for a $60.00 fee.
I am very passionate about teaching and playing the drumset. Contact me today to start your musical journey!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask the student why they want to learn how to play the drums. I ask what kind of music do they like. I find out if they have any previous experience or if they are a beginner. I show the basics. How to hold the drumsticks properly and how to use rebound when playing on a practice pad. I also show the very first basic drum beat and we give instruction on practice and setting up a consistent lesson schedule.
