About

Research shows that learning to play a musical instrument helps students perform better in school. This improves memory function, builds social skills, and reduces stress. Studying a musical instrument has many positive benefits for both children and adults. Playing along with other musicians is a great way to build long lasting relationships and is a very fulfilling activity that brings people together.

My name is John Odom and I am a Drumset Teacher in East Orlando. I have been teaching for 15 1/2 years and I have been playing the drums for forty years. I am currently the worship drummer for my church and I play in a local Christian rock band. I have many years of experience of playing with different musicians in different types of settings and venues.

Music education is something that I take very seriously. While teaching I am also a lifelong student of the drums as I continue to study and practice to keep growing as both a drummer and teacher. I am a member of the following drumming educational groups:

The Professional Drum Teachers Guild

The Sabian Education Network

I have completed the Drumset Fundamentals course with Berklee College of Music. I continue to study and grow as a teacher since I must inspire and set a good example for my students.

I have a large amount of resources to use to help students learn how to play their favorite songs. I can teach how to play with proper technique while learning many different styles, grooves, and fills. I also educate students on what it takes to play with other musicians in a band setting. I make the learning fun while the students stay motivated as they learn and grow.

I will travel to your home if you live within a twenty mile radius of my zip code. The first lesson is FREE. Subsequent lessons are $40.00 per half hour and $50.00 per hour. For students who live farther away and/or the South side of Orlando I am also teaching at Flamenco Del Sur Dance and Music School in the Narcoossee Business Park. I also assist students and parents with choosing a drumset that will work well for their child when they are ready to make a purchase. I will setup and tune an acoustic drumkit or setup and confirm that an electric drumkit is working properly for a $60.00 fee.

I am very passionate about teaching and playing the drumset. Contact me today to start your musical journey!

We’ve had a great experience with Mr. John (as we call him) as my son’s drum teacher. He is very dedicated, shows a lot of patience and takes his time to explain concepts thoroughly, making sure his students understand before moving on. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a drum teacher.

John has been teaching my 12 year old son how to play the drums this past year and its been a great experience so far! He has improved greatly as John teaches many important skills needed for drumming well. Weve been able to work on playing many praise songs that we sing at our church, which is super helpful. John is very thorough and goes above and beyond to provide video examples for my son to practice with between lessons. And he communicates well regarding the lessons and schedule. Definitely recommend.

John has been teaching our son for 3 and a half years. Our son started with John at 5 almost 6 years old, he is now 9 years old and loves the drums. John started with songs that a small child enjoys and allowed him to grow has musician. As the years went on, John has challenged our son more and more with new and different songs. John is always willing to learn a song that our son would like to be taught. We hope to work with John for many years to come as our son grows as musician and drummer.

Mr. John has been working at our performing arts school for over five years. We can attest to his incredible career, not only as a musician but also as a great teacher. The students and their parents love him. We ask for more human beings like Mr. John for this planet.

    Frequently asked questions

I ask the student why they want to learn how to play the drums. I ask what kind of music do they like. I find out if they have any previous experience or if they are a beginner. I show the basics. How to hold the drumsticks properly and how to use rebound when playing on a practice pad. I also show the very first basic drum beat and we give instruction on practice and setting up a consistent lesson schedule.

The First Lesson is Free. For Home and Online Lessons, the charge is $40.00 per half hour and $50.00 per hour. At the Flamenco Del Sur Arts Dance and Music School, the rates are $40.00 per half hour and $60.00 per hour.

Back in 2009 I used to attend a monthly Drummers for Jesus meeting in Port Orange. Our chapter leader and good friend, Gregg suggested that I start teaching the drums. He introduced me to the Drumsense program. I started with one home student. Since that time I have taught over 100 students and thousands of drum lessons. I have also hosted many recitals and have helped students go from complete beginners to building a large repertoire of music.
I have taught complete beginners who have never held a pair of drumsticks in their hands. I have worked with students who have taken lessons with previous Drum Teachers. I have taught two medical doctors, a paramedic, and a realtor. I have taught students who have experience playing other instruments such as piano and guitar. I have also taught students with conditions such as Autism, ADHD/ADD, blindness, and Cerebral Palsy.
In April there is a special Original Music Festival called Delandapalooza. This is held each year in the city of Deland. I have played there with my Christian Rock band (Just a Few Frogs) for many years.
Make sure your teacher has the ability to teach you on your level. If a teacher talks above what their students can understand, nothing will be accomplished. I am able to take difficult concepts like limb coordination and break this down to where total beginners can understand how to get their hands and feet to work together. I have made videos for my students to help them learn the grooves and fills to play their songs successfully.
A good teacher should be a good listener and should know how to respond to their students' needs. Drum students should have an idea of what they would like to learn. Sometimes younger students are not sure what their specific goals are. That is where I communicate with the student and their parents to setup a learning program that will allow the child to gain confidence and make steady progress. For adult students together we come up with a first song to learn, than work on the song structure, working to get the transitions down to have fun playing music.
