How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching hoop while working as a Child Developmental Specialist. While continually researching healthy avenues to strengthen the mind and body, I found hula hooping to be a brilliant and "sneaky" way to have fun while truly amplifying who you are inside and out. Muscle toning, cardiovascular, social-emotional are a few benefits.
What types of students have you worked with?
Ages 3 - 70, so far! :)
At one point, I taught 300 girl scouts.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Co-producing and starring in the Prince Variety Show / Purple Circus. 9 months of intense planning, choreographing, and managing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Instructors should be Insured and have 3+ experience teaching.
Many hoop dance teachers are merely hobbyists, or performers. Look for serious instructors with a background that is a solid foundation for making them a successful teacher (and learner). I am always learning more about the realm of hoop dance, and I geek out exploring and creating new concepts & vocabulary. I take hoop dance seriously, because it's seriously that good for you.
I offer tutorials online via my website.
Though I have rebranded to Breezi LLC, I own Gnar Hoops, which was a leading supplier of the highest quality hual hoops. Though the hula hooping trend has eased a bit, I always offer custom made hula hoops that are truly the correct size and are developementally appropriate.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What outcome do you see for your self?
And never forget, practice makes prgress :)
