About

In the decades I've been a musician and teacher of music, I've striven to articulate principles of good technique and musicality with each lesson, making the creation of music challenging yet fun.

Teaching is all about finding ways to relate music to everyday experiences. I look for natural, ergonomic ways to accomplish the technical challenges of the cello. Similarly, I strive to relate the musical challenges of communicating emotion by relating cello playing to the everyday ways we naturally express our emotions...through our gestures and our inner-instrument, our voice. Looking at the cello as a natural extension of our voice is the secret to mastering its expressive potential.

The challenge and greatest rewards for a teacher are in finding the key that unlocks for the student a path to learning. If a teacher can successfully transmit to a student how a musical instrument is simply another tool of communication, using an instrument instead of his/her voice or physical gestures, the teacher's role is accomplished. The rewards are inestimable for both!

He is very patient and understands the needs of the older beginning cello student. He is also open to questions texted to him between lessons, which can be helpful.

Mr. Deutsch is unlike any music teacher, or teacher at all, that I’ve ever known. Having been taught by many different orchestra directors over the years, I can confidently say that his teaching style is unique and enriching. He is an encouraging, wise person who uses detailed and illustrative analogies in addition to his extraordinary talent. In culmination, these create an infectious passion he cannot help but share with everyone he encounters. I took cello lessons with Mr. Deutsch for seven years, starting when I began playing cello in the sixth grade. He increased my ability, slowly and steadily, from novice to eventual first chair of my high school regular and select ensemble orchestras. In addition, he helped me achieve some of my greatest accomplishments to date including joining New Jersey’s regional orchestra and performing a solo cello concerto at my senior recital. I can’t thank him enough for seeding my passion for the cello and fostering an environment in which it was able to flourish. What’s more, is that I will forever think of Mr. Deutsch as one of my greatest friends and mentors, someone who has made a brilliant impact on my life in facets related to music and life in general. Anyone who has the opportunity would be privileged to learn from and grow with Mr. Deutsch.

Nine years ago, when my daughter began playing the cello in her NJ middle school orchestra, she wanted to audition for the advanced ensemble. By chance, we happened to attend a cello/piano recital at our local library, and it was there that we were fortunate to discover Robert. She began taking lessons with Robert in the sixth grade and continued all through high school. Not only is he a proficient cellist, hes also a wonderful, kind, and supportive instructor. His credentials are stellar, and his love for the instrument is inspiring. His musical insight is enormous, and he is both patient and challenging. My daughter progressed steadily while studying with Robert. Not only was she accepted into the advanced middle school ensemble, she participated in numerous other ensembles, and eventually became first chair cellist in the high school orchestras. She continues playing in college, largely due to the pure joy of music instilled by Robert. Credit for her accomplishments goes both to her dedication and to her phenomenal teacher, Robert Deutsch.
