I studied abroad for two years, after wondering why Actors from the UK were taking all the roles in the US! Kidding, I swear. I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts in Acting (The British Tradition) from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, UK. I also graduated from the University of South Florida with my Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Performance. I am certified in unarmed combat (US/UK). I've learned through various instructors under the techniques of (Movement) Laban; (Voice) Linklater, Estill; (Acting) Meisner, Stanislavki, Chehkov, and Practical Aesthetics. Each of the acting techniques differ in what is taught, but they all reach for the ...

Gypsy Van H. says, "I learned about the Chubbuck technique when I was living in South Korea. I attended two of Ivana Chubbuck's workshops, one in Japan and one in the Philippines. I absolutely fell in love with the technique. However, when I came to Orlando Florida, I started training at a studio that did not teach Chubbuck. And although their technique was very efficient, I wanted something that delved a little bit deeper into your emotions and your psyche. So, I contacted the Chubbuck studio in LA asking if there was anyone in Florida that taught the Chubbuck technique. And that's when I met Violet Tcherkin. I love Violet to death, but she and I disagree on things all the time but her willingness to let me speak freely in her classes through my training it's probably one of the things that I enjoy the most. Violet is the type of coach that doesn't want her students to be lapdogs. She wants us to speak up and to tell her how we feel. That is not always the case when it comes to an acting coach. Every time I come to class, I find new vulnerabilities within myself. That's what I had fell in love with overseas with the Chubbuck technique and what I'm learning to love more. Violet doesn't pull punches with us as students, let me rephrase, she doesn't pull punches now. When we first started out, she had a little bit of kid gloves. But now that she's gotten to know us, she's able to look at us and just be blunt about what she thinks is most effective when it comes to making us better actors. There are days I don't want to be in class. There are days when I think she's crazy. There are days when I literally want to turn off the computer and just walk away but to me it wouldn't be acting if you didn't have all of those emotions. Violet is great at teaching this technique, she's found a way to teach it with her own flair. And she's a damn good coach because of it! " Read more

As a drama educator, I’m passionate about guiding actors to discover authenticity, confidence, and creativity in their performances. My approach combines classical technique with modern sensibility — helping students not only understand the craft of acting but also connect deeply with character, story, and audience. In my monologue study sessions, I emphasize emotional truth, character motivation, and textual analysis. Whether students are preparing for auditions or developing their own artistic voice, I focus on helping them make bold choices, explore nuance, and find a personal connection to the material. Each monologue becomes a window int

Jeffrey S. says, "Mr. Rojas is an excellent salsa instructor, and what I love most about his teaching is the importance he stresses, quite actively, on hearing the music as opposed to just dancing. In order to even begin dancing one must hear the music in a certain way, and Mr. Rojas make "ear training" an active part of his lessons. Such lessons become particularly important when learning how to distinguish dancing on1 and on2, of which the latter seems to be a challenge for some, because of how one hears the music. Sir Rojas has a method to get people over that hurdle and I appreciate it very much. At the same time he always finds way to connect with the students personally in the class and is very inviting. I am always amazed with his constant positive energy which never fades, God bless and give him strength." Read more

Your Acting Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do acting classes cost?

Acting classes cost $25 to $65 per hour on average for group classes or $50 to $150+ per hour to hire a private acting coach. Prices vary depending on where you live and the instructor's experience and reputation. Acting studios that offer ongoing weekly classes typically charge $150 to $350 per month.

Acting courses and workshops can cost as little as $200 to as much as $2,800+, depending on the content, number of sessions, and the instructor's demand. Some acting workshops are short, 1- or 2-day intensive classes focusing on one aspect of the industry, while other programs last 4 to 8 weeks and cover several topics, methods, and techniques.

Most studios offer a free trial class so you can get a feel for the teaching style and decide if it's right for you.

Are online acting classes worth it?

Online acting classes are worth it if you want to pursue acting and are unable to attend acting classes in person. With online video calling platforms like Zoom and Skype, you can now study acting with the best in the industry from the comfort of your own home! Many reputable acting coaches—including those right here on Lessons—now offer online acting classes and teach the same methods and techniques that they teach in the studio.

Do you need acting classes to become an actor?

You technically don't need acting classes to become an actor. However, acting classes can help you gain confidence, learn new methods and techniques, analyze scenes and scripts, and build new industry connections and relationships. Acting classes can also teach you about the business side of acting, which is as important as acting itself.

How long do acting classes take?

Acting class length varies depending on the studio and the type of class. Some studios have 2-hour classes, while others have classes lasting 3 to 5 hours. Depending on the location, acting classes may be offered in several formats, such as ongoing weekly classes, weekend intensive workshops, and training programs that can run anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks.

What skills do you need to be an actor?

While the necessary skillset varies depending on the type of acting you pursue (think Broadway theater vs. TV commercials vs. film), all actors need a broad range of skills to portray the expressions and emotions of a character so effectively that they temporarily transport the audience to a world where the actor is indeed that character. This often involves:

  • Memorizing lines and stage cues
  • Analyzing scripts and scenes
  • Developing a character's emotions and physical expressions
  • Working with other actors, directors, and production crews
  • Adapting to unexpected changes and situations
  • Speaking clearly and adjusting one's voice to align with the character
  • Learning and developing different acting methods and techniques
  • Being comfortable in front of an audience or camera

My experience with Tcherkin studios has been nothing short of amazing! Violet made learning the Chubbuck technique a breeze. Taking her Intro to Chubbuck Technique class has really not only made me a strong, confident actor, but person as well! The Chubbuck technique has genuinely helped me communicate and understand my feelings better. This technique's foundation is authenticity and during my session with Violet I was able to grow as a human being and truly realize that goals are honestly what propels human beings. This experience has truly changed my life, and I am excited for what's to come in the future as I take more sessions! Violet YOU are amazing!
