About this pro

Hi! My name is David Kirkus, and I am a passionate drummer and electronic musician of 7+ years. I have always been dedicated to constantly learning new skills and material that both improve my playing and help me to write, arrange and produce songs quickly and effectively. I know the Ableton software almost inside and out, and am very confident in my ability to explain the components of the software in a manner that is easy to understand so that you can focus on what matters - writing your songs! Music production software can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be!

Using my own songs, I will help my students to understand what is necessary to record and produce music under any style. I will assign "homework" which will allow students to practice everything we cover in a lesson, and will allow me to guage your progress! We will cover a broad range of topics; everything from understanding the layout of the software, how to navigate and work efficiently, using the included instruments and effects, designing and creating unique and interesting sounds, laying down beats and melodies quickly, creating drum and instrument racks that can be saved and used at any time, among MANY other topics! The best part is that this is an incredibly personalized experience that I carefully tailor to eah of my students individually. I love teaching, and I cannot wait to help you get started on your musical career!

When it comes to drum lessons, I am very patient with my students and will help you to completely understand a technique or idea before moving forward. We will start with the basics if necessary, or we can discuss a good starting point after I get to know where you currently stand as a drummer! We will go over everything from the basic understanding of time and how to feel/keep time while playing, understanding the importance of a metronome, practicing stick control, foot position and technique, understanding dynamics, playing along to your favorite songs, writing and recording original drum parts among MANY other topics! I am thrilled to have the opportunity

Below are some links to my work so that you may acquainted with my writing style and skillset prior to booking a lesson:

Music has always been very special to me. I love everything from listening to music all the way to producing and recording my own songs and albums. I love creating concepts for pieces of music that revolve around stories or themes, and I love using melody, rhythm and time to explain things in ways words cannot. I spend lots of my time behind the drum set, either improvising, playing along to my favorite songs and developing techniques. I also spend plenty of time behind my computer arranging and designing original compositions. I love everything about making music, and I genuinely love teaching others how to hone in on their musical abilities as well!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Generally I will begin with a brief discussion about what my students are looking to gain from my course. I enjoy using this time to get to know about your musical influences and what you hope to accomplish. I want my students to be overly satisfied with my course, which is why I pay close attention to each of your goals and tailor my lesson plans specifically to those goals. I am confident in my ability to quickly and effectively teach you techniques and skills that will allow you to focus less on the technical side of music, and more on the creative side!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been writing and producing electronic music, as well as various other styles of music for the past 7+ years. In recent years, I began focusing on my skills in mixing and sound design. As a drummer, I have been playing since I was around 10 years old. My greatest influences include Gavin Harrison, Matt Garstka, Matt Halpern, Baard Kolstad, Tomas Haake among many other great drummers! I was the drum set player for my high school Indoor Percussion Ensemble in 2016, and since have dedicated my time to becoming a professional drummer and musician.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I do not have a standard pricing system at this time. Please contact me for details if you are interested, and I'm certain we can work out a price that works for us both!

How did you get started teaching?

There are so many people around the world that are either interested in making music, or that are already releasing songs even without much knowledge of music composition, arrangement, production, etc. With my knowledge I would love to help those looking to share their music with the world to do so with confidence and ability!

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked primarily with younger students (ages 6-14), yet have experience working with students of all age groups. I am comfortable teaching anyone that is willing to learn!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I recently had one of my songs featured on an electronic music label that I'm quite fond of called Phuture Collective. You can listen to it here if you'd like: https://soundcloud.com/phuturecollective/tabz-proche-aurora

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Find a teacher who understands what you're looking for, and more importantly who knows exactly what to offer you so that you may build on the goals you have in mind. Make sure your teacher is dedicated to teaching YOU, and make sure that they are willing to personalize your teaching experience to provide the best atmosphere and approach possible!

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

"What am I looking to gain from this course?"

"Does this instructor have my best interests in mind/are they tailoring their lesson plans to fit my musical desires?"

"Can this instructor help me to accomplish _______?"

"Is the negotiated cost of lessons appropriate considering the agreed upon schedule?"

"Is this instructor patient and open minded, or do they have a specific method of teaching that is unchanging?"

"Does this seem like fun/Am I having fun?"
