Jennie F. says, "I had never touched a guitar in my life before. So I was an absolute beginner. I am so glad that I found Dylan as my first teacher. He was friendly and patient, also with robust knowledge. We started learning lessons in early March. He walked me through every fundamental stuff and basic knowledge of music theory. I started from scratch then I'm able to read the music sheet and play a couple of songs that I like by myself right now. Every week he showed up on time. And he helped me extract sheet music from YouTube music videos. Dylan's lessons really helped me progress quite well with my beginner level. I would say I could have spent much much more time to achieve where I am without him. I wanna thank Dylan for being inspiring and encouraging on my guitar learning pathway. I would recommend Dylan to anyone who wants to play guitar regardless of age or skill level." Read more

Christine M. says, "I’m 54 a year old woman and a total novice with respect to reading music and playing any musical instrument. Recently, I decided it was something I wanted to learn so I picked up a guitar and googled a list of instructors. Started working with Tom Stroll at MindfulMusicLessons. By the first phone conversation I was asked a few questions about skill level, if any and my musical muses. From there Tom was able to formulate the perfect approach toward a starting point geared specifically for me. The lessons have been wonderful as Tom is very patient, kind and intuitive. The homework is of the caliber that makes real progress possible. I appreciate Tom expecting a lot from me even though I just started learning guitar from basically nothing. It’s easy to be pigeonholed by age or beginner status and do three lessons of scales and nursery rhymes. But instead Tom believed in my ability to meet a set goal with a curated theme geared towards my own interests. I’m very glad I’ve started up with Tom and would absolutely recommend him to anyone interested in honing existing skills or taking the plunge with something brand new and intimidating. Tom can bring out the best in you. -Christine" Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

Forest is great at structuring lessons to your ability. Additionally, he is good at adjusting the lesson plans to what you need or want to do. I started with a base knowledge and ability a year ago and have been very pleased and surprised with my progress. I recommend him to anyone looking for the flexibility of virtual lessons.

I have taken 3 lessons with Dylan so far and I am really enjoying them. He is very good at picking up on what level I am at and how to push me without being harsh. He makes sure I am playing correctly before moving on and gives good practice exercises. It's a lot of fun to learn with Dylan and he takes the time to really look and listen to me playing and provide feedback which is the whole point of one on one lessons. He is very knowledgeable about music and very humble. He handwrites the tabs for lessons which is totally awesome. Looking forward to keep learning from him.

Steve is an extraordinary instructor; his knowledge of music - sound, technique, and theory (to name a few) - is seemingly boundless. He is a dedicated and thoughtful teacher who is attentive to the level of skill and goals for each of his students. Above all, Steve is encouraging and patient - he will answer any question without hesitation and directs you to excellent resources to help you deepen your knowledge. No matter where you are in learning the guitar or learning how to work in a studio, Steve will give you the tools you need to achieve your fullest potential.

I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Ian for a few months now, and I love the steady progress that I’ve been making. Ian is very methodical in his 1-on-1 sessions, and he doesn’t let me move on until I’ve mastered a prior lesson. I like how he emphasizes timing and music theory. I also like how he balances teaching songs that I want to play while also learning from lesson books and other material. I started off doing his in-home lessons. However, due to the pandemic I switched to his virtual offerings, and I have to say that the transition has been mostly seamless. I find that he is still very observant and catches any subtle mistakes that I make while playing. In the past I’ve taken group guitar lessons elsewhere, and while fun, I find that I wasn’t truly learning or seeing significant improvement at the pace that I wanted. I already see significant improvements over the past few months of working with Ian, and I’d highly recommend Ian as a guitar teacher to anyone interested in learning to play and having fun while doing it.
