Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to begin with a conversation about your goals, then I can share a variety of options as we explore what might be the best fit for your goals.
I offer private lessons, group lessons (for tweens, youth, and adults), first dance/wedding preparation, and workshops.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a ProDVIDA professional certified instructor and a high honors graduate of the Ballroom Dance Teachers College, the nation's premier career teacher training school.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I offer monthly group class pricing as well as drop-in rates (pay-as-you go). Sibling discounts are available for the tweens and youth ballroom classes.
Don't live in the area? No problem! I am a traveling studio and can bring the dance to you. Travel fees apply.
How did you get started teaching?
As a child I was always fascinated by ballroom dancing. I grew up on a family farm and was involved in classical music until my early 30's. After being introduced to contra/set/square dancing I changed my career path and entered the beautiful, elegant world of ballroom dance. Because I didn't start dancing as a child I know what it's like to learn a new art form as an adult. Compassion, patience, and joy are at the heart of my teaching style.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have been teaching in various capacities since 1995. Having worked with people from age 5 to 80, I am experienced and adept at working with varous ages, learning styles, and goals. My students goals are my goals. Their success is my success!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Professional training and experience is very important. Ballroom certification is not required to teach dance and many instructors do not go through that rigorous, detailed training because it's so challenging. I have seen many classes where the teacher says "oh just follow me", or "do it like this." These vague responses only confuse and frustrate the student. A good instructor should be well versed in both lead and follow roles, and know the details of each pattern and how to describe every aspect of the movement in understandable, consistent terms to their students. Other things I would look for would be their level of professionalism and integrity, as well as their teaching style. Sometimes as a beginner dancer it can be hard to determine whether or not the instructor is qualified and/or a good fit for you, but if you're feeling frustrated, upset, demeaned, discouraged or confused after a lesson most likely you need to find another instructor. Be picky, it's your time and money, and your sense of well-being and success comes first.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do you want to learn how to dance, is there a special occasion like a wedding, or for exercise, as a date night, or simply for the joy of it? What dance(s) do you want to learn? What style of music do you like? What do you want to be able to do in 6 months, a year, etc.? What is your level of commitment and time/budget constraints?
Open and direct communication is key to any good relationship. Be open with your instructor about your needs and desires on a regular basis.
