I have had a passion for playing the drums since I was 11 years old. I knew very early on I was going to be a professional drummer and wanted to learn everything I could to ensure a successful career in music. This open minded attitude has led to touring, recording, teaching and overall musical experiences beyond my imagination at the time. I want to pass along everything I've learned over my 30+ year career as a full-time musician and help you realize your own drumming goals. I consider myself a lifelong student of the drums (and music in general) and want to instill a sense of curiosity and infinite possibility in all of my students. Everyday I learn something new about drumming, piano playing, music composition or music production and it has kept me inspired throughout my life. Music is truly a road that never ends and will enrich your life everyday if you choose to pursue it!

I consider it my job as a teacher to, first and foremost, inspire a student's inherent curiosity and passion for music. Although there are always possibilities for monetary success and recognition, as with any art form, music should ultimately be it's own reward. My enjoyment comes from seeing a student grow and accomplish musical goals previously thought unattainable. This feeling of accomplishment has sustained me throughout my own career, and I find great fulfillment in passing on this attitude of intrinsic reward to anyone seeking to enrich their own experience.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

My goal with any new student is to try to understand what they want to achieve in music. I always want to tailor my lessons to their needs and goals while spending some time in each lesson on universal fundamental concepts. It's more important to me that a student continues with music and enjoys the process, than following a strict generalized curriculum. It is with this in mind that I want to spend time learning about their musical background, tastes and goals in their early lessons so that I can provide inspiration along with their instruction.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been a full-time professional drummer for over 30 years and have experience playing a variety of styles in many different musical settings. I have also had the opportunity to study with some incredible teachers including Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck), John Riley (Manhattan School Of Music, Village Vanguard Orchestra) and Leland Beach (Louisiana Philharmonic). I studied for one year at the University of New Orleans in the Jazz Studies program and have recently begun to study music production at the Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC)

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Yes! Basically my rate is $60/hour, but I'm available for any 15 minute increment (30min minimum). $30/30min, $45/45min etc. I'm always happy to go longer if the student wishes and schedules permit! I also offer one free 30min introductory lesson over Zoom, so you can ask any questions you may have and see how online lessons would work for you.

How did you get started teaching?

From a very young age, I knew I wanted to play the drums. As I got older I asked myself how I could go about making a living doing just that. I realized that versatility, attitude, perseverance and hard work were the answer. It was easy to work hard because I truly loved what I was doing. The possibilities were endless and I could let my imagination run wild. As I got a little older still, I realized that this was something I could share with other people in the form of teaching. I love to pass along the knowledge I've gained from the years of studying, practicing and playing I've done, and to try to inspire these same feelings in others.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have genuinely enjoyed teaching students of all ages and musical experience levels. I always find there are things that I can impart to students whether they are complete beginners to well-established amateur or even professional musicians. I personally believe strongly in the idea of being a lifelong student myself, and continue to study both drums and piano/music theory to constantly improve my skills.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

I believe the key to learning any instrument, and indeed most things in life, is persistence. There are always going to be times that a student's motivation may wane. I feel that an inspiring and engaging teacher may mean the difference between continuing through those times and achieving success versus putting the instrument away and calling it quits. My job as a teacher is to provide as many ways as possible to help a student to find that motivation within themselves and achieve their musical goals. I'm less concerned about specific tasks than I am about providing inspiration, encouragement and a practical way to move forward.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

What are my musical and/or career goals? Am I trying to become a professional musician someday or am I just wanting to play for fun? Possibly play in a band on the weekends? What kind of music do I love to listen to and eventually want to play? Am I just looking to improve my overall skills and fundamental technique on the instrument or are there specific songs, grooves, fills or solos that I would like to learn? Who are my favorite drummers if any? Do I want to take lessons every week? Once a month? Just whenever I feel like it? These are things I am happy to accommodate and help you to answer for yourself. I believe in learning how to learn and these questions (and many others) help you to focus on why you are pursuing drum lessons to begin with. In this way we can set goals for learning that align with your own personal goals on the instrument.
