About

Hi there! My name is Jesse Lear, I'm a professional bassist and composer in the Chicago area, and I have been teaching both acoustic and electric bass lessons as well as songwriting for over 5 years.

I have substantial experience teaching all ages (from 5 to 65), musical styles, and levels - from beginner to advanced. I offer both online and in-person lessons throughout Chicago.

When studying with me, we prioritize what you are excited to learn first. I'm here to guide you where you want to go as well as help you ask questions to stay curious and find answers. If I can get you to walk away from a lesson eager to learn more, then the rest takes care of itself. You will surpass your goals in no time.

Many teachers have a set, restrictive curriculum they like to teach, which doesn't work for all students. I love creating each student's songs and supplementary exercises around their expressed interests. This offers a more personalized approach. My extensive background in performing and writing for jazz, soul/R&B/funk, pop/rock, classical, and other music genres can help you on your individual musical journey.

After years of performing and teaching music throughout Chicago and beyond, I enjoy sharing with others the excitement that playing music has brought into his life.

When I started taking bass lessons with Jesse, I often didnt practice and hardly knew what it was I should study or practice next. Within a few months of my lessons beginning, Jesse had worked with me to develop a structured and completely sustainable practice routine that I stick with to this day. Jesse always pointed me in new musical directions, but it was ultimately always my choice what I pursued at the end of the day, and hed guide me through whatever it was I wanted to learn so that I could get what I wanted to out of my lessons. Now I find myself playing along to all my favorite songs, and Im even playing in a community band.

Jesse has shown continual patience with my learning speed and is incredibly creative with his approach to tackling my unique learning style. I have found him to be kind yet persistent, ensuring that I understand the key concepts of whatever were learning. I am also enjoying the freedom to guide my own learning via my interests, with Jesse structuring lessons based on my own specific goals. All round, a fantastic teacher!
