Jack has devoted his life to the study, playing, and teaching of the Classic and Jazz guitar.  To be a master of both styles makes him singular; he is one of few who can perform both classical music and jazz.  Cecchini is equally at home whether accompanying famous stars, performing with The Chicago Symphony, The Lyric Opera or performing a guitar concerto with The Grant Park Orchestra.  Cecchini and his jazz quartet have played numerous concerts on college campuses nationwide.  He has performed difficult show scores such as "Jacque Brel" and "Promises, Promises". He has performed solo guitar for former President Gerald Fo ... View Profile

My wife and I love old movies and the evening news.  A few days ago, a newsperson began talking about how children who study music have improved powers of concentration.  My wife immediately pointed at me and said, "That's why you are able to focus so well." I guess it's true.  I've played dozens of classical peices, hundreds of Jazz tunes, and written even more.  One thing they all had in common they required the ability to focus.   When I was about 12 years old I had to play a recital.  I always got nervous playing for people.  But this time I was so prepared that I was able to literally see and hear ... My passion for music and performing sparked from childhood, collaborating with my musical family. Much of our time together was spent singing next to Grandma at the piano, picking up an instrument, and learning how it all works. I believe each student learns in a different, unique way, and am committed to discovering what practices and techniques work best for the individual. My goal at each lesson is have a collaborative experience with a positive and productive atmosphere.  A professional performer in the city of Chicago for over a decade, I began teaching 4 years ago after a collegue asked me to take a few of her students. I obtained my teaching certificate in 2006 and gradually discovered that providing private instruction is my supreme element.  I also discovered that I'm a hands-on learner - more so than I am a visual or auditory one. Hands-on learners make up a rather small percent of the population - one whose needs are easy to overlook. I make it my job to support students who need to do something in order to understand it and I do this by way of having you imitate what I do. Though imitation and repetition are my most obvious pieces, I make my lessons fun and exciting as well. Everyone can be (and already is) an actor, a musician, a skille ... View Profile

Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Chicago Guitar Instruction

Famous blues guitarist, Muddy Waters, spent much of his entire life and career in the city of Chicago. He actually flew Chuck Berry out to Chicago, and was able to set up an audition for him. The audition landed him a gig, and as a result the song Maybellene was made. Is your child the next Muddy Waters?

Maybe not; as with any skill, it takes lessons and practice to become great at guitar playing. At lessons.com, we believe in empowering people in Chicago, and across the county, to take lessons on any instrument they choose and to play well in any genre they desire. That’s why we have a long list of guitar teachers at Chicago’s local music schools, in-person guitar teachers, and online guitar teachers on lessons.com, and they are all ready to help you learn how to play the guitar well.

Look at our list of credentialed guitar teachers in Chicago and choose one within driving distance. Perhaps you have a guitar and simply don’t have the time to add driving to and from lessons into your schedule. Avoid the snow, freezing toes, and salt-covered boots and hire a guitar teacher to come to straight to your home for private lessons.

Perhaps you’ll be one of Chicago’s guitarists to play at a future Crossroads Guitar Festival, and all you need is lessons. It couldn’t be easier — just type in your zip code, and find the perfect guitar teacher for you.
