Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It's important to respect the time it takes to listen, and build trust. There is always a process of "getting to know you," that goes both ways, in a new teacher-student relationship. I feel strongly that, no matter a student's age or experience, learning can only happen effectively when the student feels comfortable and relaxed.
Lessons in all areas of instruction are two part; 1) learning and exploring theory and technique, and 2) working on repertoire, artistry, and interpretation. All of this requires practice outside the private lesson. It's important for us to establish this rhythm from the very first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I started in theatre as a child and did my professional apprenticeship at a LORT theatre when I was 13 years old. I studied violin for 7 years, ballet for 15 years, jazz and modern dance for 8+ years. I studied acting privately & in class with various teachers, including William Hickey at HB Studios in NYC. I've studied voice in classes, and workshops with notable organizations like the Greg Smith Singers, and privately in NYC and in Chicago with Carol Loverde, Typhanie Monique. I received my BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Columbia College Chicago - where I studied contemporary dance, acting, 20th-century music performance and moving image. I received my Actors Equity card in 1985 after touring internationally and working for the season at a LORT theatre in upstate NY.
I currently work as a professional singer, actress and voice over talent, having perfromed in hundreds of stage and on-camera projects internationally.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Lesson fees assume the student is enrolled in weekly lessons that meet at the same time each week. Fees are: 30 min for $35 / 45 min for $50 / 60 min for $65. I offer a 10% discount when students pay for 4 or more lessons in advance. For in-home lessons, there may be an additional travel fee depending on location.
How did you get started teaching?
While I have taught private student and workshops for decades, I really feel in love with teaching about 5 years ago when I began subbing for a colleague at a small music studio. That subbing turned into a full-time teaching and eventually I was promoted to Director of Educational Programming for the school. I left that studio in the fall of 2017 to begin my own studio, in part because I felt I need more time and space for my own creative work. Having True Muse Music & Performing Arts allows me that creative space while continuing to help young students thrive.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages, from various backgrounds. I have worked with children with learning disabilities, and autism, beginning adults, and gifted teens. I have found that if the student is willing, the exploration can happen.
