Stephanie B. says, "He teaches my five year old son and me and does a great job adjusting his teaching style for both a small child and an adult. My son absolutely loves goofing around with him and doesn’t realize he’s actually getting a really good piano lesson. In just six months my son is playing two handed songs with chords like clementine." Read more

I will be teaching piano in a way that is hopefully not like the traditional "boring piano teacher". I am 21 years old and love music! I hope to teach my students the concepts behind the music they are playing. I think most current methods of learning to play the piano are outdated and provide the student with very little understanding of music. I hope to show the student that playing and even writing music on the piano is not as hard as it may seem! Reach me at 16306088731 if interested. I love my job because I enjoy teaching people things and seeing them learn. I think seeing a student progress after a short amount of time is one of the co...

Nichole S. says, "I took a couple of years of piano lessons as a kid (didn't most of us?!), and was looking to see if I could pick it up again. For someone who is talented and a real pro at the piano, John has been patient, understanding, and flexible; accommodating my busy schedule, so I can relearn. His instruction and enthusiasm for teaching makes me believe that it's not too late to learn as an adult. You'd be remiss not to have him as your teacher!" Read more

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Mr. Bob is truly amazing! He is incredibly patient and has a unique ability to understand how our son learns best. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach, he tailors each lesson to fit our son’s learning style, which has made all the difference. We’ve been so excited to watch his confidence and progress grow, and it’s been wonderful to see him genuinely enjoy learning new pieces. We couldn’t be happier with the experience and highly recommend Mr. Bob to anyone looking for an exceptional music teacher.

I was fortunate to work with John as a colleague and as a parent. From Jan 2021 to early summer 2022, John was an amazing piano teacher to my youngest son, at the time age 8-9. He taught him keyboarding skills, finger placing, theory, basic piano songs to immediate piano songs, and it was in a fun, creative way to enjoy learning to play the piano. From 2018-2020, I got to see John work and interact with kindergarten to second grade children at church called kid's choir. He was the leader / teacher and taught them music theory, Christian contemporary and modern songs (basic and immediate) to sing, and even directed the Christmas musical for the K-2 grade children to perform. Also, I got to work alongside John in 2018 to 2020 as classroom teacher to music teacher as he conducted and led music classes to preschool age children. He taught them basic music theory and performers and instruments, interactive Christian songs they were able to sing, and interacted with them in a fun, creative way. Overall, John's piano teaching style ability is amazing how he plays, teaches, and learns. He is a master of piano playing and plays and sings so graceful and with ease. He will make a great asset to any company or business he works for with wonderful music playing or singing, and teaching his students or adults in learning to play piano in a beautiful and challenging way. He is a marvelous pianist.
