Finger Picking Folk Guitar

I love teaching guitar and have taught for 50 years. I began playing guitar at age nine. At age eighteen I studied classical guitar at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem under Joseph Yerushalmi. I also began at that time to teach guitar. In 1970 at age twenty-one I opened ‘The Guitar Studio’ in Bloomington Indiana and continued teaching 40 students per week. It was during this time that I wrote my method book for acoustic guitar called “Fingerpicking Folk Guitar”. My students find this method easy to use, make rapid progress, and can actually start playing guitar and accompany songs within the first few weeks. The ... View Profile

String Quest Studio's

I have been playing guitar for 20 years. I started teaching guitar about 5 years ago. I love to teach! It is such an awesome feeling when a student comes back, plays, and sings a song you have just taught them! I took lessons from one of the music stores for a short time, after 6 weeks I had learned the notes on the first string and how to play Beethovens, "Ode to Joy". I have to admit, I got bored and quit! Because of this I have several lesson plans that teach songs as well as chords and scales. Songs that you want to learn! It is a mixture of work and fun. I enjoy teaching one on one and I also enjoy group lessons. My wife and I had a su ... View Profile

My teaching approach: As a teacher, I don’t believe in forcing kids through method books and programs. Instead I try to teach them the songs they want to learn. I remember being 12 years old and really wanting to learn to play guitar and not trudge through “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” I believe in helping my students build curiosity and that curiosity will breed the passion necessary to progress as a student and a musician. These days I’ve been studying Troy Stetina’s lead guitar program, helping lead worship at local churches and playing in the pop/blues band Rookwood with my wife Krista. Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Indianapolis Guitar Instruction

JJ Flynn · Indianapolis, IN

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My Daughter had a Music teacher that was so connected to her students and to music. That inspired me and then the offer to teach came to my attention. Driven by helping them reach their goals musically. I love teaching because I have become thoroughly connected to the growing musical spirit of my students.

What types of students have you worked with?

My Students have ranged from 5 year olds up to Early 70s. I also have had a couple of students, who were special situations. Several years ago, I taught a five year old who was mostly blind and wanted to learn. And also a very special 16 year Autistic Boy. He started on Piano, flourished but decided that he could meet more girls playing guitar.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

To me learning music has always been vital, listening, performing, teaching and spreading the word. Music is vital for the development of the brain for all. My advice for aspiring students is to focus on your goal and practice, practice, no substitution for practice.
