Monty E. says, "Dave is an absolute gem of a teacher. I'd been stuck for a long time on the chasm between "knows a few chords and the tabs to a couple songs" and "actually feeling confident that I can play". It's only been a few weeks, but I'm starting to cross that bridge and maybe even start considering myself a guitar player. Before our first lesson he asked me for a playlist of songs I like to listen to, which he's woven into our practice sessions so that they suddenly feel attainable. This has also made listening to music way more fun. I notice riffs in songs and think "How would I have done that?" and can now fumble out my own version with a bit of effort. He knows when to let me mess around and figure something out for myself, and he knows when to step in and show me what to do. He even takes the time to record a short recap / practice video for me so that I know exactly what to work on for next time. I always leave our lessons in the best mood, and Wednesday evenings are now the most fiercely guarded block on my calendar. 10/10 would recommend." Read more

Sam C. says, "Vicente is amazing! My 12 year old daughter was taking guitar lessons at a fancy studio for a year and wasn't making much progress. A few lessons with Vicente (at home), and she was playing multiple cords and practicing all on her own. We originally planned for 1/2 hour lessons only, but she just wants to keep going with the lessons naturally, so we just moved it to 1 hour lessons without telling her. She enjoys learning from him so much; the time just flys by. Vicente has a very laid back approach that doesn't intimidate the student, and really inspires them to play. I recommend him 100%" Read more

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much do guitar lessons cost near me?

Guitar lessons cost $35 to $70 per lesson, depending on if they last 30 minutes or up to 1 hour. If it's a one-on-one lesson, it'll cost around $45 to $70 hourly. Learning guitar in a group is cheaper at $25 to $35 per session.

If you're taking lessons every month, it adds up to $170 to $315 with the typical prepaid discount.

Are guitar lessons worth it?

Guitar lessons are worth it since only a professional teacher giving you live feedback can guide you to learn faster. A good instructor helps you understand your mistakes and prevents you from developing bad habits.

Learning guitar by yourself takes a lot longer and won't prepare you as well to play in public.

At what age should I start guitar lessons?

Children can start guitar lessons from the ages of 6 to 10, or when they can comfortably hold the guitar and press the strings. Adults can start guitar lessons at any age, provided they practice regularly and patiently.

How many guitar lessons do I need?

The number of guitar lessons you need varies according to your goal and your practice routine. For many people, it typically takes about 2 to 6 months to play a simple tune. Mastering the guitar like a professional can take anywhere from 4 to 10 years.

What do you learn in guitar lessons?

In most guitar lessons, you can expect to learn:

  • How to correctly position your fingers to play chords
  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to play various scales
  • New techniques for plucking and strumming
  • How to read sheet music.

Are online guitar lessons good?

Online guitar lessons cost $35 to $55 per hour and are good for getting personal instruction from skilled teachers worldwide. Take advantage of flexible scheduling and immediate feedback while learning new guitar-playing styles. Plus, you can easily record lessons to review their advice later.

How do I find the best guitar lessons near me?

In order to find the best guitar lessons for you, look through nearby teachers listed here on the Lessons website. You can also ask for teachers at local music stores or community colleges.

Before you hire a guitar teacher, make sure to:

  • Check out prices from at least 3 different teachers.
  • Read their reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask for a list of their current or previous students that you can talk to.
  • Talk to other parents about the teacher's reputation with their children.
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and schedule before your first lesson.
  • Avoid making a big payment upfront for a month of lessons until you're comfortable with the teacher.

What questions do I ask when choosing a guitar teacher?

To find the right guitar teacher, you can ask them these questions:

  • What kind of music degree do you have?
  • How many years of experience do you have in teaching guitar?
  • Can I have a free trial lesson to see if your teaching style helps me?
  • What is the average age of your students?
  • Will you assign me finger exercises as homework?
  • How often should I practice between lessons?
  • What textbooks do I need, and where can I buy used ones?
  • How many guitar-playing styles are you an expert in?
  • Can you modify your teaching style to suit my learning abilities?
  • What should I bring to our lessons, and how long is each one?
  • Can I get a copy of our schedule, agreement, and payment terms?
  • What is your policy if I have to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I choose some of my favorite songs to learn on the guitar?

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and so over the years I've tried many times to learn an instrument. Guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, harmonica, voice... none of them really panned out for me. When I look back on it now, I see there were two things that always stopped me from getting anywhere: The first one was: when I tried to teach myself I felt too overwhelmed by all of the different advice out there. And the second thing was: I never clicked with any of the teachers I found. They were all cool people, but I struggled to learn the way they wanted me to learn, and I couldn't stay engaged with the material. My guitar lessons with David were the exact opposite of those things. They were exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. David has a very egoless teaching style, and I was really humbled by how much thought he put into every aspect of the lessons. We did four virtual lessons over Zoom, over the course of about a month and a half. He gave me exercises to practice, and notes about what we went over. In the beginning I did my best to explain my challenges to him when it comes to learning, motivation, practicing, and confidence. Shockingly, he then took all of that into account, and I never once felt like I was "letting him down" or that I wasn't "where I should be." It's very rare for me to feel that relaxed about learning something. I felt that I had the permission and the space to learn how I learn, and to follow the parts that are interesting to me. Because of that, I felt that I wanted to practice, and I did. I have rarely, if ever, met someone who takes the business of teaching as seriously as David. I can't imagine how different my life would be if I had encountered more teachers like David, in my life.

Pha Roah – Guitar Instructor Pha Roah, undoubtedly is the best guitar instructor that I’ve come across. I started learning to play the guitar in my mid 60’s and I’ve had two other instructors prior to my meeting with Pha Roah. I came across home while searching on-line at www.tsma.fun for a new instructor. My first contact with him was by phone, and after a brief conversation, I immediately felt that he was the right instructor for me. Although I felt this way, I still wanted to meet with him in person to satisfy my curiosity about his knowledge and experience of guitars, playing/teaching of guitars, and music in general. Our first meeting in person lasted for well over an hour, unlike my first meeting with my other two previous instructors which lasted just 15 – 20 minutes. After that meeting it became apparent that he was going to be my new instructor. I was very confident about his ability and trusted him - no regrets!!! Pha Roah’s theoretical, practical and technical knowledge, together with his experience in music, more so in the art of play the guitar and his patience in teaching makes him a great instructor. He is passionate about guitars and very enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge of playing the guitar. Pha Roah has the right approach and is very methodical in the way he teaches. He does not limit his students to one type of music, but expose his students to a variety of guitar music like jazz, funk, rock, classic, blues, reggae etc. This is great because it gives students like me the confidence to be able to fit into a variety of music groups. As an instructor, Pha Roah communicates in a clear and concise manner, sets attainable goals, keeps track of skill development and progress, and provides weekly feedbacks. He guides his student along the path of playing, listening/hearing and proper timing. These qualities put together makes him an outstanding instructor. Nick

I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Ian for a few months now, and I love the steady progress that I’ve been making. Ian is very methodical in his 1-on-1 sessions, and he doesn’t let me move on until I’ve mastered a prior lesson. I like how he emphasizes timing and music theory. I also like how he balances teaching songs that I want to play while also learning from lesson books and other material. I started off doing his in-home lessons. However, due to the pandemic I switched to his virtual offerings, and I have to say that the transition has been mostly seamless. I find that he is still very observant and catches any subtle mistakes that I make while playing. In the past I’ve taken group guitar lessons elsewhere, and while fun, I find that I wasn’t truly learning or seeing significant improvement at the pace that I wanted. I already see significant improvements over the past few months of working with Ian, and I’d highly recommend Ian as a guitar teacher to anyone interested in learning to play and having fun while doing it.
