I'm a classically trained guitarist, pianist, and singer. I also compose and produce both acoustic and electronic music. I received 3rd place in the New Orleans International Guitar Competition. I produce music professionally. I am polyglot who also teaches foreign languages to non-native speakers. My experience in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese allows me to anticipate potential difficulties language learners may have and my comfort in each of those languages allows me to clearly articulate and explain difficult concepts. My teaching style always adapts to the students goals and needs. I'll help you get to where you want to ... View Profile

My teaching approach: I teach beginner through intermediate guitarists and work with them to custom tailor a learning plan that works best for them. If a student wants to learn chords and songs for vocal accompaniment we can do that. I focus on steel string acoustic guitar and teach both fingerstyle and flat picking techniques and have been playing for about 30 years. I enjoy teaching and nothing makes me feel better than seeing the look on a student's face when they've successfully learned a new technique or song. I gig regularly in Hattiesburg and the surrounding region, and I use this real world experience to inform my teaching. I love to take students from beginner to intermediate to an advanced player. I've helped tons of students learn to play their favorite songs, play in bands, write songs and more. I use data tracking to track students progress, have students play to backing tracks that I give them instead of going home and playing to air, record students and coach them step by step, also do a video summary at the end of the lesson so they can see exactly what and how to practice. My students have told me time and again how they walk in the lesson playing one way and walk out a better player. My influences are: Eric Clapton. Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, Robben F ... View Profile

Marc is an incredibly skilled musician. He can play blues, acoustic folk/rock, classical, and jazz with the best of them. But as a teacher, that is not enough. You have to have the expertise plus the unique skills necessary to pass along your knowledge. You can’t teach someone based on what you know now; you have to remember how you learned what you know now. He has come to learn the best ways to teach someone to play and to express their musicality, without thinking about it.  You will not find a better guitar teacher than Marc Dobriner. My goal as a teacher is to provide an in depth understanding of the instrument to my students. Whether we are learning technique specific to the instrument or general musical concepts, it is important to me that I take the time to ensure that my students not only learn how to do something, but also the reasons why we are learning a specific concept or technique. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, so that you may enjoy playing the instrument outside of our lessons together. I prefer not to conform to a specific teaching style, because every student is different, and I have been fortunate to have ... Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.
