About

Hello music lover! My name is Anaís and I have a degree in Music Composition and Theory with a concentration in piano from Boston University. I also studied voice at Whole Tone Music Academy with Nora Maynard. I have been teaching songwriting and group voice for over a year at the Hyde Square Task Force in Jamaica Plain and have been freelancing compositions for chamber ensembles and arranging for orchestra and string quartet. I am excited about working with the voice on a holistic level integrating mind-body awareness through Alexander Technique and movement. I am also excited about designing soundscapes for theater and have the honor of working with the Contemporary Theater department at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. My compositions have been selected for score calls in 2015 and 2016 at the Woman Composers Festival of Hartford. If you want to learn composition, arranging, musicianship, ear training, piano skills for composition, work on transpositions for orchestration or get coached on performance, I am your gal!

I love seeing my student become aware of their habits and making an effort to break away from them

Frequently asked questions

I first ask the student to tell me about their goals with their interest (composition, voice, musicianship...). Then, I ask them to share with me a list of music they like and musicians/performers they admire. Then, I listen to their voice/compositions and start planning exercises based on that information.

I started volunteering at the Hyde Square Task Force in Jamaica Plain as a vocal coach and songwriter while they were working on their first ever musical! It was so much fun getting a chance to work with all the facets of the play coming together (including practicing singing and dancing simultaneously). I lived it so much that now I work there part time giving group voice and piano lessons, teaching group songwriting/composition and coaching a 10 piece band where we play salsa, rock, afro-latin and pop.

I have primarily worked with high school aged students from under served coommunities. However, I have choral conducting experience with underserved 7-11 year olds in Mexico and conducting a salsa band at the collegiate level. I also currently have a student who is a middle aged farmer. I feel comfortable teaching all these ages and am excited to work with others as well!

I think for composition, the most important thing is to find someone who asks you the difficult questions about your music and pushes you to discover more possibilities with it and therefor with yourself.
