Teaching Philosophy: I developed a teaching philosophy using proven techniques and cutting-edge methodology. The philosophy is based in the sound elements of grip, posture and setup, ball position, and alignment, and emphasizes the proper swing plane while using efficient arm and wrist motion to provide maximum leverage and power. These principles must combine with dynamic body motion that complies with the laws of biomechanics and efficiency of motion. John is the Head Golf Professional at the Quail Ridge Country Club in Acton, Ma. He studied golf instruction with legendary swing coach Jimmy Ballard, one of the “top 50” golf instructors in the world, and has been teaching Mr Ballard’s” Connected Golf Swing” in the Boston area since 1996. During this time John has taught professional athletes from the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and more than 400 students from beginners to single digit handicappers.
John’s teaching focus is on fundamental club and body positions during a golf swing and helping students identify strengths and weaknesses compared to a “text book swing” and providing the drills/tools to maintain strengths and improve weaknesses. Communication is a critical element in instruction, finding the right words to explain to a student what needs to be done along with a demonstration and getting the student to “do it” are the hallmarks of good instruction.
John says his biggest enjoyment is seeing a student improve and understanding how the improvement can continue by using the basic drills on their own when the formal lessons are over. John’s best advice-- students should watch an instructor give a lesson –or at least ask numerous questions on teaching philosophy/approach-to be sure lessons will be effective and fun.
