Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson is where I have the student play and say anything that interests them about music. This gives me a sense of where they are on their instrument and what pace I can take. The key is to keep the lessons fun first and musically educational. This applies to all the instruments (drums, bass, and guitar) that I teach.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a professional musician since my teenage years in the 80's. I grew up during the greatest era of pop, rock, funk, jazz and international music. I toured and performed with Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Wayne Shorter, Angela Bofill, Shawn Lane, Phil Upchurch, Garaj Mahal, Steve Coleman, Meshell Ndegeocello, Black Sheep, George Clinton, Maxwell, George Duke, and Randy Brecker to name a few. I am featured on many studio albums and I also host and produce my video lessons website THERICKLESSONS.COM which is now in its 6th year. I released two solo albums "One" (2012) and "Zoom" (2016) of original material in which I perform all the instruments (vocals, guitars, bass and drums) https://soundcloud.com/sean-rickman/albums I have also been a guest artist educator/performer at Stanford U, UC Berkeley, The New School, Oberlin Conservatory, Kimmel Center Philadelphia, Berkelee College of Music Boston, UCLA, Cal Arts, Jacksonville U and others. I have been teaching all ages privately in the DC area for 20 years. My full bio is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Rickman

While learning, have fun and protect your passion for the instruments. Music is your companion for life whether you become a professional, songwriter or just a passionate person of the arts.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What music should I listen to? How do I learn a song? Where do I go for inspiration? How do I get better?
