Andrea has given me superb training for several years, and I am getting closer every day to reaching my vocal dream! She has brought out qualities in my voice I did not even know were there. And I am singing in ways I never dreamed possible, thanks to Andrea's top training techniques! She covers it all. Andrea Thornock is a Master voice instructor!
I have 25 years experience of teaching voice, and some piano also. I have taught at 2 universities, on the voice faculty: University of Utah, and Weber State University.
I give my students FULL, comprehensive training, so they become a WELL-rounded performer - not just a singer!
I train the TECHNICAL side: breathing technique, as well as how to get those high notes, expand your range, blending chest & head voices.
And I also teach the ARTISTIC side: interpretation, expression, phrasing, etc.
Plus I also teach the PERFORMING aspect: stage presence, movement, gestures, staging techniques, & dramatic coaching.
I also include MUSIC THEORY & SIGHT READING.
And I can teach CONDUCTING too!
I enjoy finding the strong side of each singer, what highlights their voice the most, and what music repertoire fits them the best. And I love customizing their package to what they need, from wherever they are currently at. No 2 voices are alike, so it takes experience to know how to handle each new situation and challenge. It is fulfilling to see my students reach their dreams... and even strive for new ones!
In the first lesson, we go through exercises, scales, etc to determind your range. And while doing this, I am alsi listening and assessing what your habits are, how your breathing is, and what type of voice you have, as well as assessing the strengths you have, and what areas need work. Then we will discuss the path I would take you on. And you can decide if you wish to continue. Or if you prefer, you may go home and think on it, and get back to me. I like to get to repertoire in the 2nd lesson, so you have an inspiring song to motivate you to practice!
My Bachelor is from Brigham Young University, and my Masters is from a conservatory in NYC, Manhattan School of Music. Both my degrees are in Vocal Performance, and my undergrad is also in Music Education. My training has been extensive since then. I have worked with opera coaches in Germany & Italy, in New York City and Wash DC. I have studied in Florence, Italy and also in Austria, Germany & Switzerland. Most significant I believe in my teaching however - is that I have taken 28+ yrs of private lessons for myself! Yes, I have continued to improve and learn more & more, which is why I have SO much to share with my students! This intense and long quest is what makes me a master teacher now.
I have a couple of different packages, depending on your situation. I like to have a live chat over the phone, and hear your goals. Then I can determine what package would serve you best. So please, give me a call! *_* (703) 399-6613
People who knew me as a performer and a professional singer began to ask me for lessons. So I started teaching alonside my performing career, and the two have melded together nicely over the years...
Broadway-Musical Theater, Opera, Jazz, International styles, Christian, Praise Choir, Folk, Pop, etc. I've trained a few Rock voices now and then, but it is not my specialty.
Basically, I teach a TRUE technique. So the principles can work in ANY style of singing. I have also prepared singers for American Idol and America's Got Talent. And I have prepared singers for auditions for Broadway Tours in NYC. I have worked with ages from 6-76!
A favorite event of mine, is that I solo with a chamber orchestra each Christmas in the MESSIAH by Handel. That really makes my holiday season!
And I also enjoy watching my students perform in their school musicals, or in community theater, etc.
One of my "stars" had her debut of the role of Eponine, in Les Miserables -- that was worth all the years of teaching! And one of my students is now a voice instructor also! So I feel like I have come full circle.....
The MOST important thing in studying singing is you MUST find an authentically GOOD QUALIFIED instructor! Teaching singing is quite challenging. And there are many out there who "claim" to be good, but really don't know what they are doing. And if you happen to get in with an unqualified teacher, they can take you down a wrong path that could take you years to get back on the right track. I am not exaggerating. I have been down the wrong path myself, from a couple of teachers. That is one reason I DO KNOW what I am doing! You can TRUST my judgment of how to train your voice. So seek enough info to make sure your instructor has experience and education sufficient to guide you on a HEALTHY Vocal Path!
I would say just take time to dream, and share with me your dreams! That is what I love! I am your cheerleader and mentor! : ) And also look at your budget and your time, to make sure this is the right time or you to start. Know that vocal training takes time, it is a long path. So dont expect to get to the top overnight. I suggest that it takes a real commitment to what you want to achieve, and keep your eye on the mark - - - Go For It !!! *_*
