Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We first ask questions to find out what type of genre of dance, the Student is interested in. They are also free to participate in a dance class of their choice, to find out which is a good fit. Students are introduced to the instructor and instructor's assistant, and ask what specifically the student would like to get out of the class.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I majored in Dance & theatre at the University of Minnesota; five years of training there in Ballet, modern dance, and Jazz. I choreograph the opening numbers for three of the Miss Black Minnesota pageants. Taught creative movement/ dance, Tap, Hiphop, Jazz and modern at a dance Mpls dance studio for 5 1/2 years from 1995-2001. Started my own dance studio in 2002 to present. Teaching musical theatre, creative dance, Tap, Hiphop, and Jazz, as well as producing our annual dance recitals!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes we do. For a basic one hour class is $60.00 a month. Two class is $95.00. We offer private lessons which are negotiable. Competitive and performance level class prices are available after auditions.
How did you get started teaching?
I was ask by a former pageant contestant; who I had assisted in choreographing her dance routine. She later owned her own dance studio and ask me to become an instructor.
What types of students have you worked with?
A diverse group of students. Ages 3 to adults on different dance skill levels:
Basic, intermediate and advanced, as well as males.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My Competition team dancers perform half time at the Mpls Target center for the Harlem globetrotter 's half time entertainment. April 2017 will be our 12th year performing. The audiences are always great and suportive. Over the years I've watched my dancers grow technically along with their stage presence. Having the opportunity to perform for this event each year gives my dance studio exposure, but especially allows our dancers to show their growth and what they've learned over the years.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
View their resume and take one of their dance classes. That's always the best indication if they are good fit.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be specific in what they want from an instructor and what they want to accomplish... Whether to just dance and have fun, or to raise your dance technique level.
