I have a method to teach how to understand the entire neck of the guitar or bass from the very first lesson. This is different from traditional methods that most teachers follow. In doing so, students are setup to be able to learn on their own long after they stop taking lessons. I teach with the view, "I wish I had learned what I teach when I first started playing. Had I learned the instrument this way my abilities and progress would've grown much faster." Since I've been teaching. My students consistently comment on how much they learn and how they've noticed their abilities improve. I have a Bachelors from Gustavus Adophus College - St.Pet...

Justin H. says, "Before working with Mike I would pick up my guitar occasionally, and put it down quickly, with no direction of learning. After the first lesson with Mike I was doing basic chord strumming, and within only a few weeks I was playing rhythm for some of my favorite songs. In the nearly 2 years that I took lessons with him I learned a lot and always looked forward to learning another song." Read more

My love of guitar has always stemmed from my desire to play music that I find personally engaging. Over the years I have played many styles of music in many contexts but the simple excitement that comes from replicating something exciting is still the driving force behind my desire to play. My hope is to help create a similar connection for my students, to provide materials that feel personally import and engaging, and to add on to that passion by exposing players to exciting new music. Education runs in my family. I have been actively engaged either as a student or teacher for my entire life and I hope to always be connected to education. I ...

Your Guitar Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

Guitar lessons can be one of the most useful ways to improve your ability and have more fun playing guitar. Finding the right guitar lessons and the right guitar instructor can be a difficult task: you don't know what you are getting until you try it. Lessons.com is a great space for you to figure out what the best guitar lessons for you are - this can be done with ratings on the site and in extra teacher information. In addition to this, here are some things you can do to find the right guitar lessons and teachers.

Start off figuring out what style you are looking for. Is it acoustic or electric? What music styles are you looking for? From country and bluegrass all the way to heavy metal and rock, there are so many different styles of guitar music. If you are just starting out and are not sure what to begin with, this is okay. Some instructors are very good at teaching beginners and helping them find out what they are passionate and good at. If you do know what you are interested in, the best thing to do is to find an instructor that teaches that style. On Lessons.com you can do this by reading through the teacher's description.

After you have selected a style and a teacher, you may want to keep some extra questions in mind for your first guitar lesson. An in person lesson can be very valuable, if you show up, and if you do the work that the instructor gives you for when you are not meeting. One of the greatest methods of improving is to consistently play. Play multiple times a week, get those practice repetitions in.

Once you have made it to your first lesson, there are some questions you should consider asking. Ask the guitar teacher about their experience. How long have they been playing? How long have they been teaching? What are they best at? What styles do they teach? What is their method of teaching guitar lessons? What extra resources can you use to further your learning? It is key to ask these questions and listen.

Once you have taken your lesson, you may want to look for free online resources to take a guitar lesson. From finding free guitar song tab sheets to watching YouTube of the best ways to learning guitar lessons, there is a wide range of free content when it comes to learning guitar lessons. Be sure to check back here on Lessons.com for free online guitar learning content.

Right now, you are at your jumping off point. Find what you are interested in, and pick an instructor and try it out. There is no time like the present, and jumping right in to lessons can take you one step further than you were before. Before long you will discover the fun of taking lessons for guitar.

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 to $60 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person.

On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home.

When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

A child as young as four can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide.

That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

If you've spent any part of your life fighting off that nagging feeling that you "should've been better at guitar by now" and don't really know what to do with all of the half-learned licks, handful of cowboy chords, and that one tapping thing you learned when you discovered Eddie Van Halen (or whatever technique alongside insert-artist-here), you should do yourself a favor and at least meet with Ryan Popovic. If you would like to avoid the years of wasted time and regret you might experience building up to the situation I just described and would rather feel accomplished and confident with the instrument much earlier in your journey, you should do yourself a favor and at least meet with Ryan Popovic. I've played guitar (if you can call it that) and been 99.9% self-taught (if you can call it that) for decades, and I have had more fun and learned more about my playing and instruments in the past few months than all the decades that preceded it combined. What I like best about the classes is the small group format with people of all kinds of different skill levels and musical interests. At first I was concerned about how not having focused individual instruction might be a detriment, but it turns out having all the different perspectives, challenges, questions, and triumphs of the different people in the room is inspiring and instructive. Many folks ask things I would not have thought to ask, and I still get to learn more as a result. Everyone is really supportive, and Ryan is a great, patient teacher working with everyone long enough to answer questions and set them to work on what they need before giving them the freedom to work that idea and make some needed mistakes and discoveries while moving to the next student rather than hawking over one person's situation the entire session. The most amazing and fun thing for me personally so far is how I find myself experiencing both older favorite songs as well as things I've not heard before in a different way. My ears are starting to hear more technical detail in what's happening and relating it to how I might someday actually be able to play whichever part or song, where in the past I might've just been in total awe of someone's technical chops and didn't think I'd ever be at a level to even attempt to play their music. Whatever fears have you still sitting on the fence about committing to lessons, I feel extremely confident in saying they will quickly melt away if you can just bring yourself to START! It's so much fun! I wish I had done this literally decades ago. I'm exceedingly grateful to have had the right teacher appear when this particular student was ready. I can't recommend Ryan highly enough.

I've been taking lessons with Mike for a few years now and I'm very happy with the progress I've made. Mike is a great teacher, he's very knowledgeable and talented, and he does a really good job of incorporating my questions and interest into our lessons. He gives me good constructive feedback and always has good suggestions on how to improve. Mike has a lot of real world experience playing in bands and recording and producing music which he also works into our lessons and I find that to be incredibly valuable as well. If you're looking for a guitar teacher I would highly recommend Mike.

Al Ynigues was very welcoming and friendly, and my first drum lesson went as well as could be expected for an extremely rhythm challenged student. Mr. Ynigues lesson plan was well organized and presented.
