About

Dear parents and students,

I teach drumset and percussion lessons at studios in White Bear Lake and Forest Lake.

I teach students at all stages of musical development. I work with each student to custom design a program that facilitates their learning style while addressing their musical needs and aspirations. My students learn good practice habits, how to approach challenging material, how to prepare for auditions, recitals, and concerts, and how to develop their own creative voice. My overarching goal is for students to discover the joy of playing music while developing a high degree of musicianship.

I've been teaching for over 20 years. My students regularly become section leaders in their school band program, garner superior ratings at solo and ensemble contests, earn positions in All-State Symphonic Band, All-State Orchestra, & All-State Jazz Ensemble, and go on to receive Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in music.

In addition to teaching private lessons, I am also an American Composers Forum Teaching Artist. As a McKnight Composer Fellow (2010 & 2015) I have lead percussion and composition workshops throughout Minnesota and beyond.

I am also the author of two drumset method books that have received critical praise from Modern Drummer Magazine, Percussive Notes magazine and numerous top pros.

As a professional musician, I have performed at theaters and concert halls throughout the U.S. and abroad. In the Twin Cities, I have performed at the Guthrie Theater, the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, the Walker Art Center, OʼShaughnessy Auditorium, Ted Mann Concert Hall, Northrop Auditorium, the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, as well as numerous colleges, churches, and other venues. For additional information about my work as a composer and musician, please check out my website: peterogorman.com

Because It is important that parents feel that I’m a good match (both pedagogically and personally) for their child, I offer a free, no obligation lesson/meeting for prospective students. If you are interested in scheduling a free lesson or if you have any questions, I would be delighted to hear from you. Half hour lessons are $26. Hour lessons are $52.

Sincerely,

Peter OʼGorman

I am very impressed with the well-rounded instruction Peter gives in his studio. During the years my son studied with him, they worked on composition, drum set technique, various styles, snare solo technique, improvisation, audition preparation and the essence of percussive sounds. My sons studies with Peter culminated in earning a spot in the All-State Orchestra his junior year and as the All-State jazz drummer his senior year of high school. Peters teaching and coaching prepared my son for wonderful experiences as a versatile percussionist.

“I cant imagine how much smaller my sons world would be if we had not met Peter OGorman. Peter took a shy, introverted boy and taught him poise and self-confidence in just a few years. My son, Collin, learned not just how to drum, but how to cooperate, how to give and take, and how to enjoy music . After years of giving Collin years of drumming lessons, Peter set my son up with a jazz drumming professor and a percussion ensemble at college. Peter continues to reach out to my son and to work with him when school is out. Thank you, Peter, more than I can say, for changing Collins world.”
