Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I usually like to speak in person with the parent or if old enough the potential student himself. Many times they have a specific reason for seeking private lessons now. Such as wanting to get a better part in the musical or college auditions coming up. Often they just like to sing and want to be more confident and learn songs. “What are your goals?”
First lesson is an opportunity to see how we work together. There is a lot of “give and take” in singing lessons. I also have the fun of hearing another unique voice. I love to investigate: how does she breathe, what can her instrument do at this stage? high, low, middle. What are it’s strengths, weaknesses? Where do we go from here? In addition I try to draw out the student’s personality and participation in the process. Is this student willing to play and experiment or does he need a lot of encouragement & coaxing to play along & free his voice. Lastly we discuss repertoire.
What are the styles that they listen to? Is it Musical Theater? Classical? Gospel? Pop? Alternative?
I prefer to work on repertoire that incorporates specific technique that we are developing in the singer so I do assign songs but love it when students have ideas for songs that they want to learn and will use their suggestions when they are age and vocal developmentally appropriate.
Obviously these steps can move much more quickly when working with experienced or professional singers. Or when preparing for upcoming auditions.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
We offer 30, 45, and 60 minute private voice lessons. Prices are $35, $50 and $65 per lesson respectively.
