About

Welcome to the David Stanoch School of Drumming! My approach to teaching music on the drumset is based on a process of illumination. I want my students to understand not only how playing the instrument works but why things do or don’t work and what choices best serve the music you are playing. I want them to end every lesson ahead in their abilities from where they were at the beginning.

Music is my passion and also my vocation. I’ve been fortunate to study myself with some legendary drumset artists and have years of performance experience. It all informs my approach as an educator. I believe that the ultimate goal as players is to ”tell our own story,” isn’t it? What is your story today and what do you want it to be tomorrow?

So many of my former students have gone on to exciting careers in music. You can find some performing with artists like Lizzo, Ice T, Mint Condition, Trace Adkins, Scooter Jennings, Five Finger Death Punch, After the Burial, Acoustic Alchemy, Cloud Cult, Wookiefoot, Mickey Hart and even the Barnum & Bailey Circus! Several others have authored their own drum method books, write for Modern Drummer, DRUM!, and Drumhead magazines, and teach at Musicians Institute and School of Rock. One owns his own school in Iceland and another one even invented the Quiztone app!

I am based in Minneapolis, MN where I teach globally online as well as locally in the city. I am here for YOU! What are your goals? Let me inspire you to move closer to them than ever before. We’ll have fun working hard together doing something we both love. What could be better?

I have drummed professionally since age 12, and have worked with artists in jazz, rock, R&B, Broadway, motion pictures and television, including Hiram Bullock, George Clinton, Sheryl Crow, Richard Davis, Stanley Jordan, Keb' Mo, New Kids On The Block, Bonnie Raitt, Doc Severinsen, Ben Sidran, Timbuk 3, Butch Vig, The Supremes' Mary Wilson.

I currently record, tour and am musical director for Emmy-winner, Shaun Johnson's Big Band Experience. I taught on the faculty of McNally Smith College of Music for 27 years until the school closed in 2017, have also taught as a guest instructor at the Berklee College of Music, and present clinics and masterclasses at PASIC, NAMM and KoSA events around North America.

My method book, Mastering the Tables of Time, was voted “#1 Edu Book," in the Modern Drummer 2009 Readers Poll. I've co-authored The 2 in 1 Drummer (2013) and Drumset Rhythms (2020)––all available from Alfred Music Publishing. Mastering the Tables of Time is also available digitally from Hudson Music.

I also write for Modern Drummer, magazine and contributed to Jim Berkenstadt’s book, The Beatle Who Vanished (now being made into a major motion picture), and am currently Drum Set Editor for Percussive Notes, the journal of the Percussive Arts Society.

Myself, I've studied with many of drumming’s greatest masters, including Elliot Fine, Marvin Dahlgren, Max Roach, Alan Dawson, Ignacio Berroa, Jeff Hamilton and Chad Wackerman, and I am currently a member of the Percussive Arts Society Drum Set Committee, as well as the Modern Drummer, Remo and Vic Firth Educational Teams.

In 2018, I was presented the Legacy in Education Award by the Yamaha Musical Instrument Corp of America, and, in 2020, was one of four renowned instructors chosen by NAMM’s Percussion Marketing Council to teach in their 25th Anniversary Lessons With A Master campaign. I proudly endorse the fine percussion products made by Yamaha, Paiste, Remo, Vic Firth, Latin Percussion and Prologix Percussion.

Ive been familiar with David since he did his first printing of Mastering the Tables of Time, but things never worked out for me to study with him until after I had moved to Japan (14 hours away from Central Standard Time). When I saw that he was taking students via Skype I thought Id give it a try and Ive been very impressed with the results. When I ask a question, David has been there before and is great about offering his perspective gained from many years of teaching and playing experience. He also is extremely quick at identifying weaknesses in my playing (sometimes things I hadnt even noticed!) and suggesting workable solutions. David also has been flexible with meetings times because there is only a small window where our schedules line up on a regular basis. A solid pro and someone I would recommend for whatever your playing level & musical style is.

David is the best teacher out there! Many times I’ve struggled at the kit, whether it’s playing in odd time signatures, improving my brush work, or learning to solo, and David always has an approach that seems designed for me (although I’m guessing he’s just seen it all). I like that he’s extremely patient and non-judgmental. He also provides lengthy lesson recaps that go way above and beyond the call, which makes me appreciate the value I’m getting. Plus he’s fun to hang out with and talk music and drums. I love our weekly lessons!

Ive taken lessons both at the local music store and with world famous drummers, and have been lucky to make a full-time living from drums for more than 20 years now.
When I decided to go back and learn some more, I chose David Stanoch. I read his book years ago after it won the Modern Drummer readers poll, and lessons with him have been everything I hoped for and more.
Hes been in all the drum magazines, featured at major drum festivals, and regularly gives guidance and lessons to the biggest names in the biz. In spite of all that, he is humble, approachable, and CARES about the student. Its next to impossible to find a big name musician with all those qualities.
David Stanoch is a rare find, for sure.

I’ve been playing drum set, self-practiced, for 16 years, and in the last year of working with David I feel like I’ve accelerated another 10 years. On top of his expertise and industry leadership in educating the tables of time, he provides a great service with experience as a top educator in the music industry. When I have lessons with David, I get real world knowledge and wisdom, incredible in-depth lesson recaps, and a mentor available to communicate outside of lessons to help me out with helpful insights regarding our lessons, the industry, or life advice. I find incredible value having David as a teacher and I highly recommended him to anyone looking for help learning drums or fine tuning themselves to greatness.

    Frequently asked questions

When a student approaches me for lessons I work with them to learn what level, if any, experience they already have playing their instrument and understand what their goals are so I can design a course of study to help them achieve and surpass them and enjoy the process.

I have both studied and performed with some of the greatest musician world, outlined in detail in the "About" section here. I have years of private lesson, school band, college and professional study and touring experience to share with my students.

    My current lessons rates are

$75/hr and a $45/30 min option is available for younger students and quick tune-up coaching.

I first start teaching while I was in college when I was asked if I gave lessons from a few of my fellow percussion students at the school.

    Professionals to Beginners.
Several of my former students are currently performing concerts on tour around the globe with internationally known artists.
Make sure the chemistry is good between you and your teacher. A strong teacher will want to to get you ahead of the curve faster than they learned themselves but they will expect you to be on top of the effort it takes as well.
They should simply ask themselves the same questions first so they can see clearly where their strengths and weakness lie. Improving on the instrument is based completely on understanding what's working and what needs work.
