Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Based on your dance goals we'll determine if group lessons or private lessons are right for you.
Private lessons-
Each student will complete an introductory lesson. The 55 minute lesson will help me to understand your skill level and what we will work on future lessons. We'll then set an ideal completion date. Each lesson is designed to improve coordination, technique, and reasoning skills. On your last lesson we'll reassess your skill level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have taught ballroom at a nationally recognized studio and as a freelance instructor I have helped numerous couples reach their goals.
I have taught Hip Hop, East Coast Swing, and Latin dance in studio and in public schools.
I have studied at Broadway Dance Center, San Francisco State University.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For Private Lessons the Introductory Lesson is $60.
How did you get started teaching?
I started as an assistant teacher at Discovery Programs in New York City, then became a head teacher during their summer program.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with ages 2 to 80. I have also worked with visually impaired, hearing impaired, mute, and autistic students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love different types of dances. While assisting an African dance class at Mark Morris Dance Center, every student insisted they could not perform the choreography. Once we started the students were surprised at how much they knew and I was surprised at how good they were getting at their dance.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Pick a teacher who can help you reach your goals. Price doesn't tell you everything about who you are hiring. The cheapest instructor or the most expensive instructor may be great performers or have amazing training, but that person also has to be good at teaching. Look on line for work samples or reviews. If neither are available, then ask if you can observe a group class or if you can schedule a 30 minute lesson as a one time trial.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Does your desired goal match what you are able to invest? If you want to lose weight and meet have private lessons once a week, make sure you actually have the time to workout in between lessons.
If you want to learn to dance, but don't want to pay for private lessons then reconsider whether group lessons or combination of the two might be right for you.
