Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step is finding out what the student wants to learn. It's great that we're all at different stages of our musical journey, and each stage is awesome! Then we find out where the student is and what he/she already knows. From there, we'll develop a plan to help the student achieve their desired goals!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Berklee College Of Music with a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance. I've travelled the world playing with the top musicians in the industry (including performances at the top music festivals in the world), recorded on numerous Grammy Nominated albums, and recorded on the soundtrack for the movie 'Marshall.'
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching while in the high school marching band. During those experiences, I developed a deep appreciation for the instructional process and how it can positively affect other areas of life. My teaching journey continued while I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and my student base has grown since. Teaching is something that comes full circle; a student learning from me teaches me just as much and allows me to grow, thus, we grow together!
What types of students have you worked with?
I've had the pleasure of teaching a wide range of skill leveled students. From beginners who are just learning what sticks to use and how to hold them, to high schoolers getting ready to audition for college, to professionals seeking to continue growing and perfecting their craft.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have had the pleasure of performing on the Blue Note Jazz Cruise which features the best musicians in the world. Not only did I share the stage with many of my peer musicians, but I was able to perform music from my first self produced album, 'Searching For Something' (available on iTunes, Spotify, and at TeamAlexBailey.com).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Having fun is just as important as learning. In the process of taking lessons, find ways to apply the principles taught in those lessons to real life. Doing this helps any student of any age develop a greater sense of music, and have more fun!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Because of technology, there is a lot more availabilty of being able to learn now more than ever! So its easy to ask what you are looking for and they can lead the way as to what they can do for you.
