Vanessa Vargas

Venezuelan, Brooklyn based dancer, performer, dance educator and researcher. She holds a BFA in dance from the Escuela Taller de Danza de Caracas, a BA in Mass Media and journalism from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, an M.A in Mass Media and Social Research from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and an M.A in performance studies from Tisch School of Arts. She works in dance from both theoretically and in practice, engaging in culture studies and social theory. Was part of the permanent cast of Taller de Danza De Caracas and the Venezuelan National Dance Company since 2002, performing with various choreographers and independent artists.

Based in New York since 2014, Vanessa continues working as a dancer and performance artist for companies such as: Danielle Russo Performance Project, Rastro, Accidental Movement, Kinematik Dance Theater, ChamekiLerner, Arantxa Araujo/Monique Blum, Douglas Dunn+Dancers, and as a performing artist at MoMa for different exhibitions, including Lygia Clark’s, James Lee Byars’, David Lamelas’, and Yoko Ono’s, developing her experience as a dance educator and researcher, teaching workshops, both theoretical and practical, creating choreographic projects through collaborative and interdisciplinary practices; presenting these works in different venues such as the Festival de Jóvenes Coreógrafos (Caracas) Dixon Place, Triskelion, Creators Collective, Pioneer Works, (New York) and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Lima), and other locations in Buenos Aires and Barcelona. This year, she was awarded both a scholarship and a residency at La Caldera (Barcelona), as a part of the Barcelona International Dance Exchange.
