Juan Carlos Polo Drums
About
My name is Juan Carlos Polo, drummer, composer, and educator. I have been a drummer for over 20 years and as a performer, composer and educator I have been always tried to combine my classical and world music backgrounds.
I have been working as a private drum- set and ear training instructor, providing tutelage and resources in jazz, world, classical, pop and rock music for over 15 years. My teaching approach is focused on working with students of different ages and levels, according to their needs and different aspects: technique, coordination, music reading, transcriptions, improvisation, groove, and musicality.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Percussion from the National Conservatory of Peru and I have studied with some of the most respected drummers of NYC, such as John Riley, Mark Guiliana, Ziv Ravitz and Nicky Marrero (La Fania All Stars).
Pd.- I also give Cajon Lessons

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Working with new students is always an exciting experience for me. We all like different styles of music and genres, so I strongly believe that learning to play the music style you enjoy the most, it is definitely a crucial aspect in the learning process.
As part of this process, I always encourage my students to work on snare drum technique, which is part of the foundation of the drum-set history. Drums are definitely one of the funniest and powerful musical instruments.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been working as a private drum- set and ear training instructor, providing tutelage and resources in jazz, world, classical, pop and rock music for over 15 years.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when one of my closest friends asked me to give him lessons 14 years ago. I must say that I found really interesting the way I started thinking about the right way to communicate to others all that I have learned in the instrument.
In all these years of teaching, I have dealt with different types of students, different ages, interests, backgrounds and it has been a rewarding experience.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of different ages, from 6 to above, high school students, Pre- College and Undergrad as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Working as a guest musician in the WeBop program of Jazz at Lincoln Center has been one of the most incredible experiences until now. To appreciate how kids from 2 years to above are stimulated with Jazz music and how their parents get involved in this process is really interesting.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would suggest looking for a teacher that encourages you to go back home and continue practicing as soon as you finish the lesson. That would mean you are studying with the right person.
I must say that not all the great performers are great teachers.
