About

I am a director, writer, performer, and educator. I have worked with countless New York theater companies such as the Atlantic Theater Company, Manhattan Theater Club, Naked Angels, The 52nd Street Project, and was an original cast member and co-writer of

C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, which evolved into the Tony Award winning 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. My work in television includes appearances on many shows including “Law & Order,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” and numerous commercials for burgers, beverages, and gas.

As a founding member of the comedy group, The Bert Fershners, I worked frequently with Comedy Central, creating and performing original content for the channel. We also performed to sold out audiences on stages in New York, throughout the country, and at festivals around the world including HBO’s Aspen Comedy Festival, Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

My career as an author includes my own children’s book series, Super Chicken Nugget Boy, published by Disney/Hyperion.

As an educator, I've taught acting, playwriting, and improvisation for over thirty years, instructing thousands of students and creating curriculums for institutions such as the Yale School of Drama, NYU, The Atlantic Acting School, Lee Strasberg Theater Institute, The New York Film Academy, and the New York City Public School system. I also lead corporate workshops in team-building, interpersonal communication, and public speaking. Clients have included Google, Nike, McDonald's, GE, and hundreds of others.

Josh lives in Sleepy Hollow, NY with his wife, two daughters, and dog.

I love watching my students grow.

I love connecting with my students and supporting them as we dive into the work.

I love getting lost in the work, so that we're surprised when we've reached the end of class because we were so wrapped up in what we were doing.

I love the mechanics of every facet of acting - script analysis, voice, speech, movement, improvisation, finding truthful connections to your character's thoughts and feelings, and connecting with your scene partners.

I love actors.

Joshs teaching is very straightforward: introduce skill sets and then give students the opportunity to practice those skill sets in a safe and fun learning environment. Josh actively works to treat each student with respect, to meet them at their level while setting a high standard, and to create a positive atmosphere that it conducive to learning. Josh also works hard to stay in communication with his students after they are no longer his students. This network of people, in turn, support and collaborate with each other, fostering a community that has a shared language (shaped by their work with Josh) and that stretches across the globe.

Josh did great work with my son during the summer before his senior year as he was preparing to apply to college theater programs, and during his audition process. He provided a foundation of understanding and training in acting technique that students dont get by simply performing in plays. He helped my son to analyze monologues and build a vocabulary for discussing his acting choices, the defining elements of a scene or a character, and understanding and taking direction. I observed an expansion and deepening of my sons approach to acting while he was working with Josh. It also gave him more confidence to discuss material with the college professors he was auditioning for. Overall, Josh was fun to work with and showed a true investment in developing my sons talents. He also was able to share his experience as a working actor and writer, who has taught in college conservatory programs - all invaluable wisdom for young aspiring performers.

I loved working with Josh Lewis because he truly cares about what he does. He cares enormously about his students and he understands that everyone is different and needs different things.
Josh was one of my favorite teachers in school. No matter if I was having a bad day or a good day Josh would always brighten my mood! When I look back upon his class, I learned a lot more than I realized having the most fun in any class Ive ever been in.

Josh is a gifted educator, and one of the most supportive and creative people I know. His teaching style is rooted in encouraging each of his students to discover their unique talents, rather than pushing them toward a predetermined result. While Josh taught me craft to hone my skills, the most important things I gained from his classes were confidence and joy in my own creativity. Learning improv and sketch comedy with Josh ultimately lead to my development as a writer, director and producer in film and television.
