Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
New students will typical start in either group classes or in private lessons. The goal is the same -to make dance as fun and accessible as possible. We will talk with students about what they want to learn and then teach them that or give them recommendations if they are unsure.
We have a no-pressure sales policy, so students don't need to be scared about taking their first lesson or rushed to buy dance lessons. Our goal is to be affordable and open to all students.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All instructors are certified in either DVIDA or ISTD. Instructors have experience competing professionally and have been teaching for several years.
For instructors that teach special classes like with kids or those with medical ailments, they have either CPR or BLS training as well as medical experience. For instructors who work with competitors, they have coaching certifications.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Students should make sure that their instructor is truly qualified to teach them and has their best interests at heart. Instructors should be certified in DVIDA or ISTD, the national standard for ballroom dancing in the United States. It is also best if the instructors have experience competing professionally in Pro/pro circuts or Pro/Am circuts, even if it's for a wedding dance!
Sometimes, studios will take brand new instrutors who have never danced ballroom and charge students the same as a professional coach or world champion. Students should also be wary of packages that charge of $100 for private lessons when they aren't using all of the lessons, parties, or group classes. Granted, each city is different, but generally this is a red flad that students are being taken advantage of. An instructor should be able to accomodate a student's dance goals within the student's financial budget.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students need to think about what they would like to accomplish during their dance lesson. A good instructor will be able to help them clarify what they'd like -even if it is just to have fun. However, some students that want to compete or perform need to understand their goals in order to get the most of their lessons.
