I've been a professional musician since I was 14: whether it was rock, jazz, R&B, latin, reggae, hip hop, country, gospel, or even showtunes, the answer was always "yes!" This versatility has helped me develop a holistic approach to music, which allows me to go into any musical situation with confidence and poise- and I can share that with students. Yes, "notes" and "technique" are important. We could even say that they're the two biggest building blocks, but there's so much more to sounding good that's rarely taught in school or on YouTube. My goal is to show my students not just how to play an instrument, but how to get in the mindset ... View Profile

My teaching approach: Most all music you've ever heard is based on a diatonic scale; 12 notes, woven into a seamless tapestry of inter-connectivity in which everything you hear or think is identifiable. Evolved music instruction involves taking the mystery out of music by teaching the student  to be able to identify, in musical terms, the music they are hearing or thinking. As a result , the student is able to use this understanding  to become a creative musical force, The joy of self-expression through music provides the highest form of  fulfillment and life-enhancement that can be derived through music instruction ,while ... Frequently asked questions

How much do guitar lessons cost?

The average cost for guitar lessons is $40 per hour. Available for all ages and all skill levels of guitar playing, the pricing of individual or group guitar lessons can start as low as $20/hour. Teachers charge based on their location, years of teaching, levels of knowledge and expertise, and travel time (if applicable). Lessons can last from half an hour to a full hour, and are priced accordingly.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

If you just want to learn a few chords to strum along to some songs, then learning to play the guitar really isn't that hard for most people. Many students are able to learn a few chords and get a decent strumming pattern going after a few weeks. If you've had prior experience playing an instrument, you can expect to pick it up after just a few lessons.

Should I take guitar lessons online or in person lessons?

Private in person guitar lessons with a skilled instructor that is focused on you, your interests, and your progress is the most sought after experience and hard to replicate online. Plus, you tend to learn faster in person. On the other hand, online guitar lessons are quickly becoming popular. The selection of teachers is not limited to those in your geographical area and you can communicate via video in real time with your teacher in the comfort of your home. When filling out your request on Lessons.com, we recommend you select both online and local options, then compare your options and see what works best for you.

How old should children be before starting guitar lessons?

A child as young as 4 can begin to learn if they are really motivated and have a patient, creative, and devoted teacher. However, we've found almost all kids under six are too young to benefit from formal guitar lessons, as they require dexterity and levels of concentration children their age can't provide. That being said, lessons do not need to be formal right off the bat, and can just provide a fun introduction. Also, your child may benefit from using a ukulele to start, as it's smaller and easier to learn, but very similar instrument.

Jimmy Hudson Guitar Studio

Jimmy Hudson ยท Columbus, OH

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

My name is Jimmy Hudson, I am from Memphis Tennessee where I grew up with my dad playing and singing in bands and my mom working in the radio business so music has always been part of life for me and especially coming out of a music town such as Memphis. I have been playing for as long as I can remember and have always just loved anything having to do with music and always gravitated towards the guitar the most. The first man who ever brought me up on a stage was the late great Ben Cauley who recently passed away. I think I was maybe 14 or 15 or so and Ben was given a chance at a very young age as Otis Redding's trumpet player and of course the leader of the Barkays but he was just a poor kid from the neighborhood who happen to have been in Stax one day when Otis was in there recording.

What do you love most about your job?

I always loved the classic Memphis Music I mean we put Blues, Soul, and Rock and Roll on the Map and here I was this kid next to this guy singing, then he picks up that trumpet 3 feet away and every hair rose on the back of my neck because that was no ordinary trumpet, that was the trumpet I had heard my whole life growing up. From the I was welcomed into the Memphis Music community at a very young age.

Even before this though, obviously my Dad was my first teacher but although my parents where divorced they where super cool and I went and lived with my mother for a year at 13 turning 14 in Boulder Colorado where I hooked up with a great guitarist and teacher and rockabilly legend Chuck Hughes. I still remember my every Mon at 530 with Chuck, he helped me realize that yes I too could play lead guitar and actually play anything that I could ever imagine and I always thought that Chuck was super cool plus growing up as a musicians you get to know these younger cool dudes that worked at music stores and having a mom in Colorado and my Dad in Memphis I grew up between the 2 towns but I thought the that guy working at the music store was just about the coolest thing ever. I thought they got paid just to hang out and be cool or something.

So I was always hanging out at Yarbroughs in Memphis or in Colorado Miller Music or Wildwood in Longmont where I would hang hang with still good friends Brett Funk, who gave me my first job as a teacher, and Joe Gamble a few doors down who opened me up to more advanced concepts and theory and I ended up going to AIM from there and later the University of Colorado Boulder where yes I got to work as the cool guy in the music store but I didn't know it was going to be work, let alone music school!

While studying at AIM a few guitar players I met made major impacts on my life as a player one of which would be Barry Richman, man what a fantastic player, to this day just fabulous. The others where Jimmy Herring, Carl Cullpepper, and Sid Wolf all who made a lasting impression and I was helping Barry by doing tech work and whatever else I could do to be able to afford lessons with him when he started working with the drummer Jess Sipe. Sipe called me and asked if I would like to work with him, Jonas Helborg, and of course the late great Shawn Lane!!!

I learned so much from those guys and the many years I spent with Shawn where priceless! Shawn was untouchable and he never really thought he was anything all that special and so soft spoken and funny. I started really forming my own teaching and playing styles from all of my teachers and what I was learning from Shawn and really started getting it. There is no gospel truth in teaching, everyone learns different, I am there to point you in the right directions and let you set your own path. Im kinda like that old Indian guide wearing the robe who meets you at the foot of the cave and points you to the catacombs if you will. However I did have to stop wearing the robe as the one day I forgot my underoos and the indecency charges that followed where just kinda a nightmare! lol

My favorite students are those who come in, get to work, and do their own thing and really genuinely work at what I give them and make something out of it instead of just waiting for the answer because the answer never comes around for those who just sit there. I love taking someone who never played lead and all the sudden they are in front of 1,000 people rocking it out or for a while I was teaching Al Greene's Guitarist at one point, a gentleman by the name of Tony Smith in Memphis. So I come home from teaching one night and here is my student on David Letterman and a couple months later on Jay Leno, how cool is that?

I really specialize in teaching people who already play and get stuck in the box and desperately want out because those are the folks that get it when I open up new doors, that and serious beginners. Luckily since moving to Ohio I have carved out a niche of fairly advanced students and I no longer answer to music store or studio owners or have to spend all my time running a business as now days I have a very sweet home recording studio where I teach and I make sure to keep a buffer zone in between students in case I go over which I usually do and I have no pressure to move on to the next lessons! I am all about using any and all technology to help you get your musical thoughts out and use guitar pro, 2 computers, ultimate guitar, tablets, phones, etc....

We never had this growing up and I wish we did and I am really big on getting my students to actually record stuff, I have this great equipment, might as well use it and give them a chance to hear themselves on their own CD player while driving!

As far as advice for aspiring students, be open minded always and do what you enjoy in life. Dont spend your life chasing something that makes you miserable, find what you really love and are passionate about and figure out how to do that! Also if you want to be a professional guitarist than when the gig calls you better say yes cause there are millions of players that dream of this and would take that gig in a heart beat. I have learned and earned more playing the styles I thought I disliked than I ever did playing faster than everyone else all the time!

Jimmy Hudson is a 20 plus year professional guitarist who moved his family to Columbus Ohio in November 2014. He spent years touring, teaching, and working as a session guitarist and is from Memphis TN. He currently teaches out of the Jimmy Hudson Guitar Studio, his home based business located at I270 and Sawmill RD in the NW corner of Columbus.
