Our intent at IDS is to ensure that all our students have a wonderful experience in our classes as well as the opportunity to find joy in the art of dance.

I love teaching! I've been teaching for over 25 years, and it's my passion. It's priceless to see my students learning and feel good about themselves.

I can easily moderate the pace of my lessons according with my student needs.

I enjoy so much to see my students learning and getting better every time.

Hazel is an expert in all aspects of dance. Her exceptional knowledge and broad experience, particularly her years as a ballet dancer, give her a unique ability to teach any variety of dance. When you add her warm and caring personality, along with a genuine concern for her students, Hazel is simply the best.

I had taken some dance lessons prior to finding Hazel, but it is Hazel who taught me to dance.

Hazel Lopez has been my dance instructor in both private and group lesson formats for over four years. I had never taken a dance lesson before my retirement, but Hazel has given me expert(and very patient) instruction in a number of ballroom dances and Argentine Tango. Her expertise and ability to sense my dance movements and offer praise or advice, as needed continues to amaze me.

Frequently asked questions

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We get to meet and talk about the student needs and goals. Then we start working on the areas that he/she needs to improve.

I highly believe in connection and in technique, so I have developed a system that works very well with all my students, they feel very comfortable and get to learn much faster and complicated things.

I will move with them as fast as they could go, and I will always review to make sure what he/she has learned is developing in a nice way.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have two bachelors degrees, one in art with an specialization in dance, and the other one in journalism.

I highly believe in education, therefore I constantly go to different workshop for contiuing education and keep my skills updated.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I do, and depends on the type of dance style and the reason.

For weddings:

1 Private lesson $75, 5 lessons $70 each one, 10 lessons $65 each one, and it includes the choreography.

Regular Private Lessons:

1=$60, 5=$55, 10=$50

Group Lessons: Basically $10 per class. Drop ins $15

How did you get started teaching?

When I was in the Guatemala Ballet Company. I started teaching at the National Ballet Academy in Guatemala City.

What types of students have you worked with?

All different types. We all learn differently, therefore I adjust to all type of students.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

August 20, 2016, Dancing for a Miracle. This is a fundrasing for the Children's Hospital in Oklahoma. I performed Argentine Tango and a Waltz.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Look for the teacher credentials and perhaps try one class. Is always great to get to connect with your instructor and feel like you are progresing.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

1. Need to know what type of dance style would like to learn. If in doubt, explore on your own, go to a dance social or showcase and see all the different types of dance sytes.

2. Is important to know if you want group or private lessons.

3. Do you want to take lessons for a social dancer, competitions or performances.
