Providence Golf Instruction

Cameron Weckerley · Providence, RI

What or who inspired you to start teaching?

I have been teaching in various fields for the past 20 years. I teach world languages and comparative religions at the university level in addition to teaching golf. Regarding golf instruction, I became a PGA professional in 2006 primarily because I love the game and wanted to do something with it. In addition, the study of the golf swing strangely enhanced my martial arts studies; in both fields, a dedicated practitioner should aim to eliminate superfluous movements. When I am teaching golfers, I do not aim to “put them into correct positions.” Rather, I aim to (help them to) eliminate the extraneous movements, which allows their natural and correct swings emerge. In other words, it is a reductionist approach to golfing success, which has proven itself repeatedly in various fields, including sports and the martial arts.

What do you love most about your job?

I love working with people of various skill levels and seeing their success. Sometimes, beginners come to me, and within an hour, they have a decent and repeatable swing. After its continued practice, they turn into good golfers. When experienced players come, sometimes it is more difficult to make a change because they are so used to duplicating the motion they have been making for years. I typically ask if they want a quick fix or a real (lasting) fix. If they want a quick one, I can usually get them hitting the ball where they want it to go within a single lesson, although I caution them that such a fix is like putting a bandage on something that needs stitches. For those who wish to make a real and lasting improvement, we begin in slow motion without a ball, as that helps to eliminate the players’ reliance on their previously ingrained motions. Then, once the player can do it correctly in slow motion, we move on to real speed, and then we reintroduce the golf ball. This has proven successful with players of varied skill levels. In sum, I love seeing the success of players of all ability levels.

What types of students have you worked with?

I continue to work with players of all ability levels: beginners, high school and collegiate golfers, people with disabilities, and a couple of professional players.

Tell us about your passion for teaching

I write articles for various golf magazines, and I have even written a book entitled If the Samurai Played Golf... Zen Strategies for a Winning Game, which has helped many people to eliminate extraneous motions and play better golf. I have also appeared on television and radio interviews. The articles I write explain easy ways to use Zen and yoga teachings to play better and more consistent golf. To improve my performance as an instructor, I constantly research new techniques and drills and evaluate their effectiveness in curing a myriad of golfers’ problems. I have been constantly learning to be a better teacher throughout the years, making sure I know my subject well and improving my ability to deliver information consistently. I also use drills tailored to each student; I spend my time consistently improving. My undergraduate degrees included education (in addition to Spanish, Italian, and Japanese) and my Master’s degree is also in education. My doctoral research also focused on educational pedagogy. I put in a ton of time and effort to be the best teacher I can be, which is reflected in my students’ skill.

What advice would you give aspiring students?

It is never to early or too late to start playing golf. See a professional before you begin so you do not pick up bad habits. If you have been playing for years and wish to get better, it is not too late to forge a simple and repeatable swing. Set up a lesson, and we will get rid of extraneous movements, letting your own natural and dependable swing emerge.
