Hello! I am a Massachusetts-based freelance violinist looking to build a teaching studio serving musicians of all ages and abilities! I am looking to primarily teach violin, as this is my main instrument, but I can also teach beginner piano, and any level of music theory. Born into a family of professional classical musicians, I began studying violin and piano at the age of four, and played my first concert at the age of five. I began my professional violin performance career at the age of nine, and my teaching career at the age of eleven. Since then, I have played professionally around the country and world, as a soloist, chamber musician,

Erica L. says, "Pat Petersen is an excellent violin and viola teacher. My daughter has taken lessons with her regularly for over six years and has progressed very well as a player under Pat's instruction. She now also teaches viola to my younger son. Both of my children thrive musically under her guidance and strive to do their best and to meet her high (yet reasonable) expectations. Overall, she's good natured, caring, and professional. We feel very lucky to have found her as a teacher!" Read more

Adam's M. says, "It is very hard to narrow to just a couple of things, there are so many! My son never had an instructor like him... He is extremely well educated in music, music theory and composition. He focuses on hand placement, before it's something that needs correction, but for my son who is twice exceptional (Gifted & Special Needs) he has persisted and successfully corrected his hold. This was something teachers in past didn't focus on and worked hard, but couldn't correct. Gregory charges a very fair rate for what he offers and 2 MA level degrees he holds, both in music and education! When he saw things not going well, he offered my son to quit, which made my son think it over, refuse to quit and make efforts to focus and be more serious! Before we arrived at this point during COVID19 months and prior to the shut down, if one method didn't work, he'd try to reach my son through another. At one of the lessons, he noticed Adam had desire to compose, so he switched to composition for a bit, in order to develop trust and win my son's listening ears again. Right before COVID19, Adam started to improve on violin hold, but we had to go in lockdown mode. This extraordinary educator quickly became my son's daily anchor/clock as if. If we had Gregory that day and Adam got to compose, Adam would listen better and feel more hopeful, less anxious. Gregory then realized Adam had gaps in music theory and he took as long as Adam needed to 'drill' the knowledge in until Adam (ADHD Combined Type 3) would retain it. All through out he consulted with the parent (or parents) about what works, what doesn't and asked the parent what else the parent thought might work. I have seldom seen this in my past 3 years trying to pay my son's violin and piano lessons. I'm serious when I write that what Gregory was able to do in months, others couldn't complete in years with my wilful, happy, go lucky, anxious, yet musically ambitious child. I highly recommend him for online lessons and once COVID19 ends for in person ones too! He is an example of what each teacher should be, but often they just aren't. If your child needs shorter, but daily lessons, he will do such a schedule. If you only need audition exam prep, he'll tutor you for that, if you need 45 mins or an hour, less times a week, he'll adjust to fit needs of student and parent... He teaches children and adults... Seriously, I still can't believe I found someone this knowledgeable and professional for such fair price, well bellow music school rates and minus any organizational politics! This is why we love it at Johnston Violin, Music Theory and Music Composition Lessons!" Read more

How much do violin lessons cost near me?

Violin lessons cost $30 to $80 per session for classes starting at 30 minutes long or up to 60 minutes long. A private violin teacher costs $50 to $80 for an hour. A group lesson costs $20 to $30 each time.

You can expect to pay $190 to $360 every month when pre-booking violin lessons.

Are violin lessons worth it?

Violin lessons are worth it if you aspire to enhance your skills rapidly and perform for audiences. Expert tutelage in the violin can aid in cultivating appropriate techniques and tackling challenges efficiently, thus accelerating progress.

Learning violin without private feedback is extremely difficult and takes much longer.

How many violin lessons do I need?

You need as many violin lessons as it takes to reach your personal goals, depending on how good you are now, how much you practice, and how qualified your teacher is. Most folks need to take violin classes regularly for many months before they can play a basic song or read music.

Generally, it takes about 3 to 6 years to start playing many different songs quite well. If you want to play like a professional, it often takes more than 10 years of ongoing practice and tutoring.

How long are violin lessons?

Violin lessons are 30 minutes long for beginners and up to 60 minutes long on average. Extended lessons are only for advanced students, will cost extra, and are subject to the teacher's availability.

What age is best to start violin lessons?

The best age to start violin lessons is between 4 to 7 years old at the earliest, or whenever you have a strong enough focus on learning and can hold the instrument comfortably. Children need to exhibit sufficient physical coordination and concentration before they can start violin lessons.

However, adults are capable of learning and deriving pleasure from playing the violin, irrespective of their age.

How do I find a violin teacher near me?

You can find a violin teacher nearby very quickly by browsing the listings here on the Lessons website. Alternatively, you can ask for affiliated private teachers at local music stores.

  • Before hiring a violin teacher in your area, always remember to:
  • Compare the prices of at least 3 violin instructors.
  • Read what others have said about the teachers on Lessons and Google.
  • Ask them which of their past students you can talk to for a reference.
  • Get a written agreement and a lesson plan before the first lesson.
  • Follow a plan to pay a little at a time until you feel sure the teacher is right for you.

What questions do I ask a violin teacher before hiring?

Here are some questions to help you find the best violin teacher:

  • How many years have you been teaching the violin?
  • What age group of students do you prefer teaching?
  • How many degrees in music do you have, and do you play professionally?
  • Can I try out a lesson for free or with a discount to see if it works for me?
  • Do you have violin rentals at your school if I don't have one at home?
  • How much do I need to practice to reach my goals?
  • What books or sheet music should I buy?
  • Can you change how you teach to help students with special needs?
  • What kind of violin music are you best at teaching?
  • Should I expect homework to memorize?
  • What should I bring, and how long does each class last?
  • Can I get a copy of our class schedule, agreement, and how to pay?
  • What happens if I need to cancel a class due to an emergency?
  • Can I pick some of my favorite songs to learn?

I feel very lucky to have Mrs. Petersen as my viola teacher. She is incredibly professional, patient, and enthusiastic. I have been taking lessons with her every week for 9 years now, and would not change a thing. Because of her guidance, I have been able to succeed in groups such as the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Symphony, the junior and senior All-State Orchestras, and the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony. She has had a significant impact on my life, and inspires me every day to become both a better violist and a better person.
