Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We offer group classes and private lessons. With newer students, they typically join one of our beginner level classes. These classes usually have anywhere from 8 to 30 people in them. And there is no need to bring a partner, because we rotate partners during class. As for apparrel, the only thing we recommend is that students bring shoes that don't grip the floor too much. Soft rubber soled shoes typically don't work very well for dancing (i.e., most athletic shoes). We suggest shoes with leather bottoms, artificial crepe (EVA), suade, or maybe hard rubber.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching swing dancing for over 20 years. And I studied with several of the original swing dancers from the 1930s.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Group classes are usually around $40 or $50 for three or hour hours of instruction. Private lessons (myself and one or two students) are $75 an hour for one student and $100 an hour for a couple. Small group private lessons (6 to 10 people) are $150 an hour (the cost being split between all of the students)
How did you get started teaching?
I loved swing music, and I wanted to learn the dance that my grandparents did to that music. They were too old to teach me much. But I eventually found other people to teach me. Shortly after that, a swing dancing revival started to grow in the U.S. So, I supposed I got in on the ground floor of that revival. And the next thing you know, I was being asked to teach.
What types of students have you worked with?
I only work with adults, ages 18 and up. I teach both leads (usually men) and follows (usually women).
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The event was called "Shaggin' in the Rain", and it takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was great fun! The students were so eager to learn, and the evening dances were very exciting. There were competitions and social dancing to live music all night.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Practicing and having a dedicated partner to practice with are the keys to your success in swing dance.
