My focus is on getting new drummers started with the instrument: learning proper stick holding techniques; proper posture on the throne; playing rudiments, grooves, and fills; and developing effective practice routines. I emphasize the importance of learning the fundamentals (i.e., rudiments); but I also strive to keep the students interested by showing how to orchestrate these rudiments around the kit (i.e., playing grooves and fills, which is what every drummer loves to play!). It's important to develop a love for the instrument before working on the tedious rudiments; I believe that providing context for the fundamentals will make the drummer want to start working on them more!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
On day one you are going to learn how to play your first beat! That's right, on your first day! I want to start off by showing you how fun drums can be so you can quickly discover your love for the instrument. We'll then take a step back and work on the standard rudiments, which are essential for any aspiring drummer.

I personally do 75 to 95% of my practicing on workout pads (3 piece set-up). They are compact, relatively silent, they help to establish good hand-eye coordination, and they promote efficiency on a minium set-up (i.e., maximum play on a mimum kit).
