About

One of the greatest joys of my career is teaching in my private studio. I love watching a student develop their skills over time, and enjoy guiding them toward their goal. I have an eclectic style of teaching that meets each student where they are. Every lesson is individually designed based on the student's current level, what their ultimate goals are, and the amount of work they are willing to put forth into learning the instrument. I try to balance lessons with challenging material and a fun atmosphere.

Students don't need to know how to read music prior to their lessons, nor do they need to have had past harp or piano training. However, we will be reading music in our lessons, and this is something we can work on together. Basic theory and other musical concepts are taught in conjunction with the pieces that are being learned.

I accept students from ages 7-107, and value the range of skills and life experiences that various ages bring. Lessons are taught in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. Beginning and younger students usually benefit from shorter lessons. I always offer a free introductory lesson to introduce you to the instrument, and to help you determine if our personalities are compatible.

I've been playing piano and keyboard for 40 years, and harp for 20 years. I've been teaching both for more than 10 years, and love helping others learn more about themselves through music.

I am a member of the Music Teacher's National Association, the Washington State Music Teacher's Association, and the Puget Sound Harp Society.

I love sharing the joy of playing music with others. I especially enjoy teaching new harp players and watching their eyes light up with something like a glissando on the harp or a familiar song on the piano. It's magical!

Cheryl is the exact type of teacher that I needed for picking up the harp. She has lots of experience and knowledge, but she makes sure to take things at your pace and is patient through the learning process. She also has a positive/happy attitude which helps keep the learning journey fun and light-hearted. I am very happy with my progress over the past 7 months and look forward to continuing to develop on the harp!

Cheryl takes the time to learn about my musical goals and to help me set realistic ones. She also puts a great deal of effort into finding music that I will enjoy playing and that is at my skill level, but stretches me too. She is gentle and happy, and makes corrections with kindness. I have learned a lot from taking lessons with Cheryl.

    Frequently asked questions

My approach to working with new students is starting with asking them to play something they like or are currently working on, and then asking what their goals are for lessons. I tailor lessons specifically to help the student achieve their goals. I include music theory at an appropriate level and incorporate exercises and songs into each lesson, sometimes in the forms of puzzles or games. I try to select songs and books based on the student's interest, age and ability, and will work with students on songs they enjoy playing. I typically discuss and agree on goals for three and six months with each student and parent as applicable. I love getting students together to play for each other as well as publicly in recitals, concerts and other events, but only when the student is ready.

Fourteen years private music lessons on piano and harp, both pedal and lever. Thirty years experience as a church musician, playing piano, organ, harp solo and ensemble music. Member of Puget Sound Folk Harp Society and Snohomish County Music Teachers Association. I attend harp symposiums and play with other harp players on a regular basis.

Fees: I charge by how much time you’d like for each lesson

    30-minute lesson                                  $35

    45-minute lesson                                 $45

    60-minute lesson                                 $60

Payment is expected at the time of the lesson; payments accepted via cash, checks, Zelle and Venmo. For special circumstances such as lessons away from my home, purchase of specifically requested music or music transcription, additional costs to be discussed.

I love playing the harp, and was approached by several friends and acquaintances who know I play harp, asking for lessons. From there, I expanded my music studio and now teach both pedal and lever harp to beginners through advanced students.

I have worked with children teen and adult students, including some with learning challenges. I have helped students prepare for graded examinations using the ABRSM method, for playing in orchestras, and for playing with other harps and instruments.

I was the sponsor of a "Harp for the Holidays" concert that included nine harps, most my students. The group played a variety of holiday music including solos, duets and group tunes and the audience expressed how much they enjoyed the sound of so many harps playing together.

Talk to a knowledgeable harper or harpist before you rent or buy a harp, to make sure you get the size and quality instrument that will further your learning and enjoyment. While ability to read music isn't required, it will help you learn the harp faster. Ask how the teacher incorporates reading music and music theory into lessons, and the types of music taught, as well as the methods used during lessons.

What style(s) of harp do you teach? What resources or techniques do you use? Am I required to purchase certain books or materials? How big should my harp be? Can you help me locate a harp to rent or buy? Will I be required to buy certain method books? Can I play popular/Christmas/Christian music on the harp? Do you support and encourage playing with other musicians?
